  1. I cut tall yogurt containers into 1 inch strips and use them as markers for the plants. I write the name of the seedling on the yogurt container strip.

  2. I cut up plastic containers like sour cream or cortage cheese containers to make labels for plants and seedlings because I am forever running out of them

  3. If you use a big seed-starting tray along with a humidity dome, cut out each cell individually so that you can remove a cell out of the humidity dome after a seed sprouts.

I absolutely love the design of your seed-starting kits, James. They look absolutely top-tier, but they are way out of my budget. You should look into adding a more affordable option with thinner plastic.

A suggestion on a possible improvement of your elite seed-starting kit: Make the cells modular. Maybe incorporate a basket of some type to hold/lift the cells?

  4. To protect my plants from the rabbits and squirrels I use soda bottles that I cut the tops and bottoms off, take the labels off, and use two bamboo stakes to hold it in place around the plant to protect it as it grows. I then stack more soda bottles on top of each other as the plant grows until it's large enough that I know the squirrels and rabbits won't eat it. Then I just slide the bottles up and over and save them in a bag for next year.

  5. Thanks for the great video as always, James! Does anyone know if that's just standard potting mix that he's using in the solo cup? I noticed he said potting mix and not seed starting mix. I'm going to start my own seeds for the first time.

  6. ❤ those are all good hacks. I do have all the plastic containers and a few milk jugs. As well, some scrawny grape vines. Today I looked to see if i could cut the vine by half because it is very thin and new leaves are only at the end od a 6' length. Putting it in the dirt is a great idea❤❤❤

  7. I get peppers and eggplant in from our community garden sale, but it's not usually warm enough to safely put them out in the garden before they've outgrown the 4" pots. Quart-size yogurt containers make excellent pots to size up with, and you can use the double-cup method with them.

  8. I use half-gallon soy milk cartons on their sides to start sweet potato slips. Make a sort of boat by cutting one of the long sides off and making it a little shallower. Just fill part way with dirt, lay a sweet potato on there, and nestle it down about halfway. It's perfect size the potato and fits nicely on the window sill. We just keep them going after we pull our slips off, they make a nice houseplant and you can eat the leaves whenever you need to prune them back. For starting slips it seems to work much better and is less trouble than the toothpick method.

  9. I sometimes get a single-serving juice bottle, turns out they are the perfect size to root tomato suckers! The great thing for me is I could label them with a sharpie and transport the suckers in water without worrying too much about spills, just by putting them in the car's cupholders. Yay for free tomato plants!

  10. Great tips and free. I also enjoy reading comments getting even more. James. Thanks for sharing and loving clips of Tuck. ❤❤♥🐕♥♥♥♥♥

  11. Appreciate the tips that aren’t trying to sell something. Stuff like this brings good karma

  12. My hacks. 1. Sometimes I wet a napkin or fill a glass with Aspirin water to germinate the seeds faster. 2. most of the time I plant 3 seeds. When they grow 4 leaves I take the 2 smaller ones out, but instead of throwing them out I plant them in another place. 3. I have a experimental garden. For seeds that just look odd. Some times I get different colors or strange shaped plants. It always keeps me guessing.
