How long can we expect houseplants to last? This week, in partnership with @aphriainc ’s social impact platform, @plantpositivity, we’re taking a hard look at the lifespan of our houseplants so we can have realistic expectations on what to expect with houseplant ownership.

Quite often, houseplant owners have the expectation that all of their plants should look perfect and live forever if only given proper care, but anyone who has owned houseplants for several years knows this is not the case. Not only do different plants have different lifespans, people have different ideas on what is a pleasing shape/structure – they won’t stay the same forever! This is why I see houseplants as having a Subjective Lifespan.

As the plant grows into the shape of your space, there may come a time when it is unmanageable or unruly. This is the time to propagate.

I happen to like this gnarly Pilea stem but if you wanted a more upright plant, you could cut it, root it, and transplant it. We’ll talk about propagation next week!
