Lads my herb patch is thriving but Basil is taking a beating from something in the night, can I put a ring of salt around it’s base or should I just put it in a pot?

Basil is much happier indoors in Ireland. Greenfly is it’s main pest, but it wouldn’t have liked the rain and wind we’ve had over the last few days either. Dig it up and put it somewhere sunny indoors would be my advice.

I’ve never tried Basil outdoors in Ireland. The salt will help stop whatever is eating it but I’d say the temperature is too low for it to thrive.

Do you have rabbits? My rabbit loves basil and would happily eat the whole thing 😂

Something seems to be eating it all right. But I’ve never even tried to grow basil outdoors. The best I did with tomatoes and basil was indoors in a small glasshouse.

Alas, many of us love to eat basil. Greenfly, whitefly and slugs, among others.
But Basil is a delicate sun-loving plant. Annual, so dies at end of year and you must sow new seed next spring. It doesn’t like the cold or wind. Very fragile little chap altogether.
Yes, I’d put it in a pot and then on a sunny windowsill where you can keep your eye on it daily. It also doesn’t like over-watering, so, a spoonful a day.

If you want to leave it out you could make it a little green house out of something like an empty 5ltr water bottle.
