I picked up 4 fallen prickly pear fruits (?) from a parking lot a while back, and left them for about a week. 3 of them shriveled to nothing but I think there are a few seeds I could try out. I put this one in a little dirt and I was so surprised and pleased to see some action! I swear this wasn't here a few days ago. No roots anywhere though, so I'm not sure what his long term plan is.

It’s not a fruit, it’s a piece of cactus. If a piece of a cactus falls off it will often grow offshoots. The broken off piece will supply the offshoots with water and nutrients until they have grown roots. Don’t water as long as the “mother” is still alive. Eventually it will shrivel up and die but that can take months, even a year or more
