Spatiphyllum root rot after repotting

My spatiphyllum was beautiful and giant until I had the idea to prune and repot it since the soil was very compacted. But after a week it just started to wilt and droop. At first I thought it was just in shock due to the prune and transplant but today I was cutting some leaves to help it recover and the whole plant lifted out of the plant, showing me the almost 100% of the roots were black, soft and kinda smelly and loose. I’m still horrified because it had so many roots and now there is only THREE left 😭
The before and after it is so sad, I just put it in the water hoping the roots will propagate but don’t have that much hope for the poor thing.
