About this video:
In this video I share with you my frugal tips on how you can grow your garden on a budget. Thanks for watching – Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #gardentour

do you want to save money in your garden as we head into a new year let’s face it we could all stand to save a little bit of money whenever we can over the years on my channel I have shared ways in which I like to stretch the budget when it comes to the Garden I’ve shown this over and over again in different videos and in this video I’m going to share with you my top tips that are easy ways that you can stretch your budget and save more money in your garden this [Music] year hi it’s staff let’s go ahead and get into the new year frugal fit starting with number one finding landscape materials online on sites such as Facebook Marketplace we have done this most recently specifically with hardscaping materials now when you work in the garden Landscaping pertains to your trees shrubs and plants and hardscaping pertains to things that you use to Edge your borders where you have your plants your walkways your patios and so forth hardscaping materials are really expensive but a great way that we found to save money on heartscape materials is by searching sites like Craigslist off offer up and the best one that we’ve liked a lot lately is Facebook Marketplace in fact I think that everyone uses Facebook Marketplace these days it is a great way to search for things when there are homeowners who are looking to do new renovation projects in their Garden they have to take apart what they currently have in place and a lot of times it’s pretty expensive to get that material hauled away so homeowners will then post those materials on Facebook Marketplace for other people to come and pick up at a really discounted price pretty much a fraction of what you would pay if you were buying these materials brand new and in some cases they even want to get rid of it for free because they just need this stuff gone so if you haven’t yet used Facebook Marketplace to pick up hardscaping materials you should certainly look there first we’ve had great luck with it in fact all of the new beds that we created in our backyard starting with our Japanese Maple Garden and the new bed that we created behind our patio just this fall came from all of the Cobblestone came from Facebook Marketplace Craigslist and so forth we saved a great amount of money doing it this way and you can only find um Hardscape materials you can also find landscaping materials Facebook Marketplace is a great resource for things like plants trees shrubs you can even buy garden um Decor such as benches bird baths and even Planters and I’ve even seen house plants on Facebook and Marketplace so it’s a great resource if you haven’t used it yet I highly encourage you to do that you can put in your area and do a search and it will tell you within a certain distance where these things are located one thing I will leave you with is that you certainly have to act quick because things move fast so I hope that you’ll try Facebook Marketplace the next time that you need landscaping or hardscaping materials number two reusing your potting soil in the past when I was a newer Gardener I thought that I had to replace all of the potting soil in my Planters each season when I put new plants into the Container whether it be planting up my containers for the the summer or in the fall when I was doing a refresh I kept buying potting soil and this adds up quickly well let me tell you you do not have to replace your potting soil in your containers each time that you redo those containers my recommendation is what I’ve been doing is just to remove about a third of the soil in that container and freshen it up with some new soil that you can then amend with some slow release fertilizer and plant your plants into them every couple of years you will start getting lots of roots in your containers and at that point it’s probably a good idea to start from scratch and replace your soil but you don’t have to do it every season I probably do it every other year or so and that will save you a good amount of money on potting soil another way that I have found to save money on potting soil specifically when you are filling up really large Planters or containers is to use filler material now you don’t want to use things that will break down such as cardboard boxes and so forth you want to use hard plastics so basically anything that you would put into your recycle bin such as juice bottles or water bottles you can use those to fill the bottom of your planters that are really large to take up some volume I’ve even found that recycled Nursery containers those cans that you bring home with your plants what do you do with them afterwards well they are a great candidate to take up space in your Planters you flip them upside down put them at the bottom of the Planters fill them with soil and now you’re only using about half of the soil that you would have had you not put anything in there to take up some space now this work best with things like annuals because annuals don’t need a ton of soil to work on root development because they’re only going to be in your planter temporarily but if you were going to plant something like an evergreen or something you wanted to leave in the container more permanently then I would recommend using soil all the way down but if you’re just planting up animals fill it up with some of these recycled materials and save yourself some money on potting soil number three dividing perennials I know this might seem obvious to some of you but if if you are a newer Gardener you may not know that you can divide your perennials um in a couple of different ways number one is if you go out shopping for plants not all of us have a budget to buy three or five or seven groups of the same plant so what you can do is you when you go shopping at a nursery or garden center look for the container of The Perennial you’re interested in that has the largest plant some of them um an example is hasta you can even look at the container and see that there are two or three division points so that when you bring that plant home right from the garden center or Nursery it is a candidate for division right off the bat so that is a great way to get more plants out of just one and stretch your gardening budget you can also look to divide plants in your own garden shopping your own garden is a wonderful way to stretch your budget if you have a perennial that’s been planted for 2 or 3 years and now it has gotten really large dig up that plant divide it and now you have several sharing plants with other Garden friends another great way to stretch your gardening budget gardeners always have plants in need of dividing and they are always more than happy to pass on plants to others you can pass on those divisions you can swap for other plants that you may not have in your garden these are great ways to grow your garden on a budget perennials are a wonderful place to spend your money because they come back year after year and so it’s a great investment another couple of ways that you can save money on perennials is by shopping and season clearance if you’ve been around my channel for a while then you know that I love to take you to the garden centers and local box stores shopping and I always like to make you aware of anytime that there is an end of season clearance in the summer a lot of the perennials will go on sale at the Garden Centers so if you don’t already subscribe to my channel go ahead and click subscribe and the notification Bell and anytime that I post one of these videos you will actually know when these plants are on sale so that you can go ahead and take advantage and pick some up for your own garden I also like to go to roadside plant stand stands in my town there are a couple of plant stands that you can visit and get plants at a really discounted rate and these are just plants that people will dig up from their garden and divide and sell them um at on a car or somewhere at the end of the road great way to get perennial plants on the cheap and my last method is by going to Garden fairs a lot of times in the summer local Garden clubs will hold plant sales and garden fairs and that is another really great way to pick up inexpensive perennials number four plant more ground cover and the reason you’re to plant more ground cover is because over time you will need less mulch now mulch can get pretty expensive especially if you’re ordering it by the yard and it’s also pretty labor intensive to spread mulch and it’s something you have to do at least every other or every couple of years so in order to prevent or over time having to use less mulch you can start by planting more Ground Covers now Mulch and ground covers serve an important purpose in the garden not only do they cover your soil to keep the roots of plants cool they retain moisture and they also suppress weeds there are two types of ground covers that you can plant there are evergreen ground covers and I recently planted a bunch on a Hillside Garden area that I have and the variety that I planted was called blue rug juniper and Evergreen is just that it stays Evergreen year round and over time it will spread to create sort of a carpet it’s very low growing and the blue rug juniper that I planted is also great for erosion control so if you have a hillside area or a place that is difficult to mulch this would make an ideal ground cover or Mulch and you also have perennial type ground covers and some examples of this would be lamium I have a few different varieties about three different varieties of lamium it’s really beautiful it spreads nicely will have a little bit of a bloom during the growing season and I also have another one called bugle weed or bugle weed um auga is the name and it also spreads wonderfully I have a type called Angelina Stone crop so there are so many varieties so the Evergreen ground cover stays Evergreen you have it year round the perennial ground covers will die back and will show up again in the spring and both of these over time will spread to cover your soil and create a living Mulch and number five grow from seed now you can grow from seeds perennials which are plants that will come back year after year as well as annuals which will grow all in one year and then die off and it is so easy to do from just a pack of seeds now a pack of seeds is fairly inexpensive it just costs a couple of dollars and you can get multiple plants now you can either buy seeds there are multiple resources that you can use to purchase seeds from you can get them at the store you can buy them online you can also swap with friends when it gets to be this time of year lots of friends have extra packets of seeds that you can just swap with each other and try growing different plants just from seed swaps and just recently over the last couple of years my library actually has a Seed Catalog now so the library can also be a great resource to go and pick up some free packs of seeds now growing from seed is supery easy and if you’ve never grown from seed before you can try starting with some things like annuals and some really easy ones to try are Cosmos sunflowers and zenyas and just last year I grew a beautiful variety of Zena called the Sahara double Ripple raspberry Zena it was a short stature Zena that I grew from seed which I direct sewed in little pots of soil as soon as the weather outside was warm enough and they did beautifully for me and another one that I’ve grown for a couple of years is gamina and I absolutely love it I also started those from seed and they were really easy um you just soak the seeds sew them in some dirt and you can either sew them in some pots or you can create some mini greenh houses out of recycled materials in a method called winter sewing now winter sewing is something that I’m really passionate about and something I’ve been doing for a really long time I actually have a whole playlist on my channel that you can check out if you’re not familiar with the winter sewing method of Growing Seeds It’s a Wonderful way to grow seeds without the need for any expensive lights or growing setups so if you haven’t tried growing from seed before give the winter sewing a method and give growing from seed a chance I think you’ll really like it and I’ve even grown a bunch of perennials from seed some cone flowers I grew a beautiful variety called White Swan these really big tall white cone flowers a variety called Green Envy that was really beautiful and even last year with the winter sewing method I grew some ladies mantle and it was really successful did wonderfully so a pack of seeds equals multiple plants growing from seed is a wonderful way to stretch your budget in the garden well that was my list of five things that you can use to save money in your garden this year and while a lot of them seem obvious I think sometimes just having it in a listed format is a good refresher so that we can head into the new gardening season with these things at the Forefront of our mind and as we head into a new year I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all so much for viewing my channel for making comments um I’m just over 2 years now of being on YouTube I started my videos back in around regularly anyway um in the fall of 2021 and I can’t believe thankful that you come to my Channel watch my videos and leave comments for me um and I don’t take that lightly so I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all not only have I had the opportunity 1. I’m in southern new Hampshire and hope to be able to winter sow this year. It’s just been too warm.

  2. I 2nd your suggestion of saving money by winter sowing! I am also passionate about winter sowing too, and it's because I have had SO much success growing from seed with winter sowing.
There is only one more thing I would add to your list, and that is propagating. We have these beautiful lavender bushes outside my office, so I took clippings at the end of summer and have 6 lavender plants growing in my garage, ready to plant outdoors in the spring. 🙂

  3. Facebook is great for this. I have picked up a load of sand for free, stepping stones and wood. All free. Also go to "offer up," as well. As for gnats you can prepare the indoor soil with neem cake. 1 gallon water to 3 1/2 heaping teaspoons, shake, let set 2 hours, and use. don't keep left overs from this. It. turns smelly if you do. If you prepare the intial soil when probagating and neem cake, you will not have gnats, guaranteed. I use Naked Neem from online.

  4. Thank you, Steph! I’m really looking forward to all of your ideas and practices this year. Happy happy new year.

  5. Awesome budget stretchers Steph! Thanks for sharing all this! I bet you've got a million plans floating in your head for summer!! Cheers!

  6. Thank you for the reminder to split my perennials!
I also started my whole flower farm for my new wedding venue last year all from your inspiring winter sowing videos. It really worked. It was a big job but no need for all the seed starting infrastructure!

  7. Love the tip about dividing plants! Did this successfully with salvia, butterfly bush, and even 2 panicle hydrangeas after watching you do this with Boston ferns!

  8. Thank you for all the budgeting ideas! Super helpful! Pls continue as this is not addressed as much elsewhere and so needed!!! Happy New Year, Steph!

  9. I absolutely love your channel, Steph! A lot of great and helpful information. I am in process of moving and these tips are great reminders for me 😀

  10. Hey girl hey… I absolutely love love love your channel!!! Weekends I binge!!!
