Central Oregon, high desert Zone 6b. I gathered this moss (anyone know species) in the cold forest. I have covered lava rocks with a soil blend paste I made, and settled in the moss I have washed and picked through. There is a drainage hole on the bottom, so there is a minimal airflow, though lid can be removed pretty easily. New to this so any thoughts? Thank you

Looks great! Not sure the species, but looks like some kind of cushion moss. It definitely has a shot. I’d just keep an eye on moisture. If it doesn’t have a false bottom it may not drain sufficiently, so look out for a soggy bottom or rot near the base. As for air flow you likely can just remove the lid for an hour at certain intervals (it’ll probably take experimenting to figure out if this should be done weekly, every 2 weeks, or even less frequently). Good luck!
Could that be sphagnum? It’s so beautiful!
