@THERUSTEDGARDEN
I left my big bag of peat moss open and outside over the winter, it definitely got snowed and rained on. Is it still good to use?
What is your opinion on compost from the municipal city piles???
I am done with peat moss for containers, it is hydrophobic, does not absorb water easily and dries out much faster than other options.
Looks awesome! Thank you for explaining it! Have a great day!
Plus…. how much chemical has leached into the product from the bag itself??????????
This video literally just saved me about $100. I was ready to buy bagged garden soil. Just going to get peat moss and top soil now! (Plus some of my own compost)
Very helpful! Thank you!
Hi Gary how are you doing today iam doing fine today thank you for the information 😂😂
I just wanted to say that I’ve been following this channel for years. It started me on my gardening journey. And I can tell you honestly it will now be an activity I do for the rest of my life. Thank you, I’m very grateful 🙏
Last fall I mixed cheap topsoil with a liberal amount of sawdust in my 4in raised bed and now (Feb) I have worms. For sciency reasons I don't understand you have to do this in the fall so the sawdust has time to breakdown and give nitrogen back to the soil.
Peat moss cost: $23 / 6 ft³ = $3.83 / ft³
That ^^ is way more expensive than necessary. You can use finished compost (which you an make yourself for free) & composted cow manure (which you can often find for free or for a very low price).
I make my own mix. 1part peat, 1 part black cow, 1/2 part vermiculite, 1/2 part perlite. I add bone meal if potting up tomatoes and peppers. Blood meal in every mix. Some rock phosphate or azomite in most mixes. There is a big difference in the quality of bagged compost and peatmoss when I buy them. I sift everything thru 1/4" hardware cloth. The last 3 bags of screened black cow filled a 5 gal bucket with bark. I want composted poo. Bark is $2.00 a bag. BC is $8.50 Sometimes hardly any bark, clay and rocks. The cheap compost is $2.50. But is 1/3 debri. I put the bark and wood to good use and as mulch or put in my in ground beds.
50-50 by weight or volume?
In the past Home Depot had bails of organi peat moss on sale for $11,which was several dollars less than normal price here on the west coast. Great info btw and the mix recipes
I am watching this video as I rest from Sifting my raised bed mix. Wrong for planting my starts on a vertical GreenStalk. Finer soil needed. Excellent video as always!!
Would you use a mix like this for indoor plants too? I usually buy potting mix to avoid bringing bugs indoors when re-potting house plants.
Hi Gary. Thanks for the information. Will pass this along to my son who is starting his first serious garden. My question is about the pelleted alphalfa (I think) that you have shown as a nitrogen fetilizer. I can't find this ecept as horse feed. Is that the same? Thank you so much in advance. Be well from Canada 🇨🇦
Wonderful stuff here! ❤ I am absolutely blessed to live here in this amazing old forest and have everything (soil-wise) provided. Thank you Spirit/Universe for everything I have.
60% coco coir 20% worm casting 20% perlite. Works great. Make sure to used buffered coco or buffer it your self.
