Hardneck garlic spends the winter establishing roots. Come late winter and early spring, just weed and water it in well with any water-soluble fertilizer. The goal is to support green growth and just let the leaves absorb the sun’s energy.

Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

  2. I was literally just thinking about whether or not now is the time to plant another batch of garlic, then I get on here and you just uploaded about garlic, 😂 thanks again Gary! Always appreciate your helpful tips! 🧄💓

  3. I have both hard neck and soft neck GARLUC – I just heard you say you can plant soft neck GARLUC in the Spring?

I have both hard-neck and soft-neck from Fall 2923 that I did not plant!

  4. I was just checking my garlic bed to see if there was anything green yet. dont see any .. but this next week is above average in the 40’s and 50’s (5b/6a coastal southern maine) so hopefully soon!

  5. I just took a peek at mine here in New Hampshire, the leaf mulch is still pretty frozen but I did see some small green shoots so I know they established last Fall. Once it’s warm enough I carefully take away all the mulch, spread worm castings around the base and liquid organic fertilizer. Then I use fresh shredded leaf mulch and done. I planted 160 last Fall. Dehydrated garlic powder uses up a lot of those and I have plenty left over for seed and eating, hot sauces etc. Every Fall I replant more and do cover crops and soil building after the harvest. I never have a problem using the same bed if I bury bokashi scraps, compost earth worm castings and cover crops. I even add fresh bone meal and wood ash, inoculated biochar and alfalfa pellets and compost teas. I love growing soil too, every year the life in there just gets so much better.

  6. If you have a dry spring, you will want to make sure to water it also, otherwise if you get regular rain, not really needed, at least in my opinion.

  7. Garlic is one of my more consistent crops. Perhaps because the squirrels leave them alone. For years I planted both softneck and hardneck varieties but after half a dozen years of the hardneck out performing that's what I plant.

  8. Gary, I live in zone 6 and would like to try to grow elephant garlic. Have you tried to yet?

  9. Thanks for the helpful tips.I'm growing my garlic in tote containers and all sprouted except one tote. I'll fertilize them with fish emulsion come March and again in May, as per your suggestion. Appreciate it!

  10. Threw some in the ground without much else in the fall, zone 6b. See the tips now. Think it’s time to take this seriously and do more! thanks for the info always!
