As you can see on the surface of the water mold is starting to grow (white stuff). Probably from the decaying matter such as the miniature log… anyone know if I should try and clear it up?

It looks nice! But it needs a bit more airspace.
The white stuff is biofilm, which is a good sign, it’s food for the first critters:
