Thankfully this year we have become self sufficient on many kitchen staples which has helped us save money🌱

My go to varieties are:

🥬Lettuce – Gone are the days of shop bought lettuce going off in the fridge before we can finish it. We pick fresh leaves from the garden when needed.

🍅Tomatoes – Tastier and cheaper than shop bought! Just one of my cherry tomato plants had over 100 on it (yes I counted..)😂 Plus you can make chutneys and pasta sauces for using over the colder months.

🥒Cucumbers – Last year I gave away more cucumbers than we could eat from just 2 plants! Plus you can pickle them😍

🧄Garlic – One harvest lasts me all year! I use garlic in most dishes.. never enough!

🧅Onions – My harvest this year has been keeping us going for months. Red and yellow onions I store, white onions I slice and freeze. I have spring onions growing at all times for picking as needed!

🫘Beans – French, runner and broad beans are my favourite. I prefer climbing varieties as I feel I can grow more in a smaller space, then plant dwarf varieties in any gaps I can.

🌿Herbs – I love having a constant supply of fresh herbs and I dehydrate for dried herbs in winter. Herbs aren’t cheap from the shop and they don’t last long if you’re into cooking!

🍓Strawberries – They grow like mad and tasty, much cheaper to grow your own than shop bought. You can make jam or freeze them. Plus plant the runners for extra plants next year!

I grow ALL of these in containers! You don’t need a big garden to grow your own food. If you can fit a pot on your windowsill or balcony, you can grow more than you think! 💚

Let me know what you think and happy to answer any questions!👇☺️
