Well you are in the root zone of that tree too, I would look into stepables, perhaps put in some stepping stones so your feet are going to avoid killing the plants, if you do that you could get:
Blue star creeper
Pennyroyal
Creeping thyme
Or fleur de lawn

It is a guerilla gardening sort of situation so I can’t do pavers, haha. I believe the roots are down there somewhere.

Hostas come in lots of sizes & colors, are perennial in zone 5 and grow well in the shade.

What about a gravel path for the foot traffic, and bleeding heart, hostas and astilbe plantings?
