Just a quick thanks to this sub. Whatever new Reddit algorithms brought bedbugs,, GenZ fashion outfits, plumbing, and wedding dresses to my feed….also brought this one.
The ring was added about 2 years ago when I had the cement slab redone. The old slab was in line with the edge of the house and right up next to that oak. The idea for the ring was to get the cement away from the tree a bit by cutting into the slab area..which it did…but the ring was also supposed to be level with the slab. They made it a whole course too high. I’d always heard it was bad to bury the bottoms of trees, but didn’t think it was buried so deep as to be a problem. This sub taught me otherwise. (For reference, the dirt line you can see around the tree where it used to be buried is about an inch or two below the top of the stone ring.)
For now I’ll leave it dug down in the middle like this and add a layer of shredded leaf mulch, but eventually I’ll probably bust out a course of blocks and re-set the cap stones down at slab level.
