Hi everybody. Kinda just threw this together on a whim. I’m going to add chopped plant matter to facilitate decomposition. My question is does it need a top? I live in southwest Florida on a little less than an acre. I placed the pit as far from the house as possible. My kids waste a lot of food. I’ve read anything that isn’t meat or dairy is okay but I also don’t want to cause myself any issues with rodents. Thanks for the help!

I would add a lot of fresh lawn clippings to that before adding food scraps. Thats all browns and isn’t going to compost/get hot quickly if you just start adding food scraps to it. You want it cooking before you throw food scraps in there, especially if critters are a concern.
Since you just started, I would suggest going to a couple local Starbucks and asking for used coffee grounds. They have a program and give away bags for free. My local Starbucks has a bin in the front of store where I regularly pick up 25lb bags of grounds if/when I need them. That gets my pile up to 140+ degrees, too hot for any vermin to be interested in
