What is this plant that’s popped up in my garden? It’s like crack cocaine to butterflies, I’ve counted 10 on it at once. Thanks

    Butterfly Bush – Buddleja genus

    It’s butterfly crack indeed!

Buddleja davidii, most likely due to the purple flowers.

Classed as invasive due to it easily spreading and out pacing native trees in the wild.

More so for gardens, the roots are known to exploit gaps in brickwork or concrete and will have the strength to damage, undermine or collapse foundations. The branches grow too close to one another to allow birds to hide or nest within them. They will also over crowd other plants. More generally speaking they are considerably weak with their limbs and it is not uncommon for it’s growth in a year to dislodge or sever it’s own branch.

There are a number of dwarf species and sterile varients which mostly have the same ‘davidii’ name. It’s your garden ultimately so if you want to let it grow, it’s up to you, just understand the only benefit to wildlife is the flowers produce a lot of nectar.

There are native plants that produce as much nectar while providing benefits for other species throughout the year, berberis and common dogwood for instance are up to 5m tall and fastastic for their flowers, pollenators love them and birds thrive on their berries, both can be evergreen, it just depends on exactly what you want for your garden.

And yes I have a vendetta against buddleja, due to the damage they caused my house!

I thought this was a lilac? What’s the difference?
