Start by aerating and overseeeding this fall. Might be worthwhile to get some compost under your seed and some peat moss over the top. Next year don’t forget to pre emergent and fertilize on a schedule.

    1. Soil test first. 2. PH Test. 3. Spray for weeds. 4. De-thatch (if need) 5. Fine Compost top dressing. 6. Amendments ( if recommended from soil test). 7. Water. 8. Aerated. 9. Level with sand or top soil( if needed). 10. Water. 11. Seed. 12. Cover with cut straw, straw mates, Water.
    Wait for spring.

  3. Seed next weekend, labor day weekend is a great time to seed in your region. Rent a slit seeder. Use starter fert. Keep the seed moist (water 4x per day for 10 minutes). Cover if needed in high sun areas, but that looks like a shady area.

MA lawns are so finicky cuz of sandy soil

Top dress the bare areas with loam seed. Fertilizer and water daily.

I’m in Quebec. Rake it up, turn over the soil and seed. Keep moist a couple of weeks.

The bottom one looks like a baby T-Rex just under the surface & the top one looks like an adult long nose wombat.

I would excavate carefully then replant.
