First year (somewhat) successfully growing dahlias and I’m in love with them!
Tried last year but they never actually grew big enough to flower thanks to the slugs that decimated and stunted them.
Photo descriptions:
1. Dahlia Penhill Watermelon. My favorite this year.
2. Dahlia Cornel Bronze. First one to flower and very prolific with super long stems, excellent for cutting.
3. Dahlia Wine Eyed Jill
4. The dahlia patch today. The purple flowers were a surprise, I bought a tuber called bantling from the range, they were supposed to be orange, this is what came up instead.
5. The patch back in May.
6. The bed freshly built, planted and mulched. I tried Strulch this year and I’m convinced that it’s the reason i haven’t had any slug damage this year. It also suppressed the weeds, will use it every year.
7. I had a few set backs, starting with this little guy and his friends digging up and eating my Labyrinth tubers, they never grew back.
Learned so much this year, now I hope I manage to overwinter them properly so the come back next year. I will be removing the purple tubers and adding more varieties. I’m also taking cutting of my favorite ones to have more plants and flowers next year. I might even starts a second bed. I’m officially dahlia crazy 😜

Gorgeous! I’ve learned so much this year and like you, already excited for next year.
I’m kicking myself for not getting the Penhill Watermelon, it’s absolutely stunning. Definitely getting it for next year.

Absolutely beautiful! I only grow dwarf varieties and overwinter mine in their bed, absolutely covered in Strulch (gamechanger). I only lost one tuber from rot, the others all sprung up again after their hibernation and are going beautifully. After some initial slug damage, they’ve recovered and I found out why – for the first time in years, we have a hedgehog back in the garden!
Pom-pom dahlias are my favourite, but the colour of that Penhill Watermelon is stunning!
