Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Oh Girl!! The sacrifice we make for our loved ones😂❤❤
Also kudos to Miah for holding it together off camera
The gamble of growing 🌶 ❤

  2. My husband is Hispanic, and he took some of my jalapeno peppers, joking with me on how they aren't hot for him. Then he bit into one and had the same reaction you did.

  3. Where are buying La Dalia pimenton de la vera paprikas? And not spending $35 on three 2 oz cans?

  4. Omy goodness! I felt ur pain girl😭 if you ever get a hot 🔥 pepper in future, drink a glass of milk rite away to curb the pain!

  5. Jess that was very funny. We laughed so much. Always a delight watching you in the kitchen. You are so precious. Thank you ❤

  6. I don’t know how you do what you do with an autoimmune disease. I have chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and it kicks my butt. I am no longer able to tolerate the heat, which I used to love. Having little or no energy and pain is difficult to live with. Sending warm hugs. Don’t forget to rest your body and do nothing sometimes😊

  7. Sweet Jess, OMG, when you realized that pepper was hot, I said get a piece of bread it'll put the fire out. Your correct on lightly salted food for the up north people. I'm from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan my mom, and grandma always lightly salted with Morton's salt or we went without. I've found Redmond Salt, love it with all the minerals. We use it all the time here. My last order was a 25 pounds of the pink mineral salt. Just in case I need to pack meat in salt, I'm set. I also use the mineral salt to make sure I'm hydrated.

I've learned the good salt is the pink with all the minerals, not the white salt my mom always bought, and used.

  8. I just experienced the pepper shock earlier this week, too. That's no joke! I love simple sheet pan dinners. That looks delicious and I'm sure your family loved it, even if their food was touching 😂

  9. I have family members that have alpha gal. Bite by a lone star tick. Now they can’t eat/ be around mammal. That’s meat, dairy, etc. Look at cosmetic items that might have bovine ingredients (deodorant, etc). My brother is so bad, that he now can’t be near his (4) dogs!

  10. Oh my goodness – that was a shock. So I'm guessing you'll be tasting tiny slivers of the peppers now 🙂 My mom once took sliced green bell peppers as part of a veggie tray to an event, and they turned out to be hot. They got several people running for something to drink.

As for heat – the Hottest month on record here in the PNW actually cooked my garlic crop in the ground. I've never had to mulch it while it was growing til now, but times are changing.

  11. Tonight we were harvesting from the garden and my daughter also made a comment that the holy basil really made the garden smell nice. I have you to thank for the holy basil, and I really love the iced tea that it makes.

  12. I wonder if the pandemic shot is why u have those health problems. I got auto immune health problems about a month after my second shot. I attribute it to that.

  13. The big red one looks like an Anaheim pepper. I grew them this year and they are supposed to be sweet but I am not as good at biting into them like that 😂

  14. I’ve started reading ‘Fast like a girl’ which talks about fasting to heal different issues, maybe you could read/listen to it and see if doing a a couple day fast might be worth trying

  15. 😅😂😊🌶🌶🌶🌶sorry Jess but it was so funny. Hope you have recovered. 🫂🫂🫂🫂🐨🐨🐨🐨🦘🦘🦘🦘

  16. We make suppertime around dusk (sometimes later) because of the heat, especially in summer. It makes sense to do breakfast after morning chores, lunch is random, and supper is late in summer and early in winter – we eat with the cycles in more than one way. 🙂

  17. I feel you about the dietary restrictions! Life is better for me when I take my restrictions seriously, though I agree that being gluten-free is difficult when in social situations and restaurants. Best wishes, Jess.
