Why not a moss pole? You’d think that the aerial roots need to be rooted against a tree trunk in order for the newer leaves to get really big but as long as the main vine is supported to go upwards, that’s all you need structurally (assuming light and watering are done properly). A metal trellis is also much stronger since you can get them in a triangular shape as seen here.

Do you have to support a Monstera? Yes. Its growth structure is a vine so it will naturally trail along, making the overall plant wider instead of taller.
