Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. We have had a wet summer and autumn, not as wet as some parts of NZ , but much more than we usually get. You just have to take what you get and make the best of it. 💕💕🌻🌻

  2. I went to a community college in Ohio for landscaping. We had a weather class. Lively hood is correct! I may just make things beautiful and not to eat…but gotta pay the crew! LOL I love ya Jess! Weather is important. 🙂

  3. I live here in Florence, SC and I can tell you this is not our normal. While we do have tropical systems that give us a lot of rain at times, the low temps are something that I don’t ever remember. We may like the cooler temps but the garden sure doesn’t! The Lord knows what we need and I trust Him completely.

  4. Here in PA we haven’t had rain in a MONTH! Went from storms that overflowed my rain barrel in a day to not a drop in 4 weeks. I’m begging for rain at this point. We’re on city water. The rates doubled in January. And I KNEW it was gonna be a very dry month bc Ryan Hall Y’all WARNED ME! I’m glued to Ryan during storm chases.

  5. Wetter than normal year so far, in the upper Mohave Desert mountains here in Arizona, too. I hope you get slightly warmer and drier weather but be glad you have water.

  6. Today it was 78 in Minnesota. You have our regular temp and we have yours.

  7. Garden thinking is the best, i wish I could write down the genious things i come up with! 🙃😁
Would love some of your rain, such a dry spring here. My rain barrels are almost empty!
Rainy days on the farm meant fix things for me, work on tractors and implements….maintenance stuff. But yes eventually you just have to hope you can do it in the rain.
    Weather is so important 👍

  8. For those on the west coast there's also pacific northwest weather guy I trust him more than any of the forecasters from the big cities who often ignore our part of the state

  9. The weather is pretty scary on how different it is, and this means crops will be scare. I live on the Oregon Coast and I am really caring for my fruits and vegetables. Our problem here is low temperatures this time of year.

  10. Hey Jess wanted to let you know I clicked your link for botanical interests and bought some seeds yesterday and my card was hacked. My bank said it looks like a link was compromised getting to their website. Just thought I'd let you know!!

  11. Kalamata, Hellas here, and we have over 3 weeks of rain evey day which is worrinsom for our Olive trees and our vegies

  12. I'm in Australia so we are heading into our winter at the moment (and it is already colder than usual with high snow falls), but our last growing season of spring, summer and autumn were the coldest and wettest for decades, we had snow days in what was supposed to be our hottest months. In the height of summer we usually average highs of 30-35deg celsius but not this year we were lucky most days to get highs of 22 c and the nights were dipping down to 4and 5 deg celsius, very chilly, highly unusual and an absolutely terrible growing season. Out of the 10 tomato plants I had grown the only ones that had a chance to ripen on the vine for fresh eating were the yellow lemon drops, and as for peppers they were a write off… they just did not get a chance to thrive with such cold night temperatures.

  13. Hey Jess I started listening to to Ryan Hall back during some scary early Spring storms and he is on point with his forecast! I am in central NY and starting into a 10 day streak of warm to hot dry days which means watering all the starts we all just were able to get planted! I have a bit more infrastructure this year that includes soaker hoses in my main garden as well as a shade garden that usually takes 200 feet of hoses to drag! So counting my blessings and deciding to invest in more hosing that I can customize! The coolest part of the four soaker hoses that I have is that I found them on the side of the road in the free pile after a garage sale! The cob webs on them were deceiving as when I opened them they were never used! Saving time and keeping the water at the roots has been a game changer! We will see if June is going to cool off later in the month or stay hot? We will see!

  14. I noticed your last video cut off. I actually thought it was my computer and went back to watch again. Nope. No "I bless you until next time". I always do look forward to that. I haven't told you but I absolutely love your haircut. We are supposed to get rain this week. We shall see. Love Bev from Oklahoma

  15. Willows should never be put by a pond. They will dry up a pond. They are beautiful tho. I had to cut ours down and I hated it

  16. We live in Northern Door County, Wisconsin. We got to 84 today and haven’t had rain in 2 weeks. We would like our weather back and you can have this heat!😂

  17. Go Fireflies !, sweet baby dragon-bush beans. Yay for the sunshine. We need more rain here in Manteca Ca., so you are lucky. Nice video !

  18. Ugh, the weather matters so much for our garden. This is MY daily talk with my husband. So my of my seedling stunted because the weather is too cold in the morning. I seeded a whole 4×6 bed with medicinal plants and non of them came up. I had to restart my cucumbers because they stunted. I kept ny tomatoes and peppers inside a little longer because I was so afraid they would be stunted as well. Now I’m fighting with time and still colder temps in the morning than usual.

  19. I live in a province where the main industries are all weather dependent- farming, fishing and tourism. A conversation is not complete unless it involves the weather. We have been very dry and warmer than normal, with quick hard frosts and freezes. Last frost date is supposed to be Sat. Lets hope it is accurate. Love the new inground garden. Fascinated to see how it grows with the water capture system.
