Raised Beds have gained a lot of popularity, however you must know not to make these type of mistakes in your raised bed garden. You must use the correct building material such as redwood or treat your wood with raw linseed oil. You must provide proper watering to your raised beds to maintain moisture and be sure not to overcrowd your plants or plant the same type of plants in the same area year after year.

Sweet dog!
Beautiful raised beds jag!
If one wants a bed a bit higher than what you shown here, would you recommend filling bottom with tree sticks, kitchen scrapes, leaves, grass…etc. before put in soils? Thanks
The other reason i ask is the question I always have in mind: would those sticks and Kitchen scraps etc. generate a lot of pest bugs during the decomposing period that will affect the plants grow above? Thanks
My big mistake was building too close to a laural oak. The roots invaded my beds and I can't even get a shovel thru it. It took 8 years so I did get some good gardening. And the 2×8's were free. Can't beat that.
If I was to do it again I would put a weed fabric on the bottom and staple it to the wood.
The tree is necessary, here in Florida, for afternoon shade.
I built my beds from 2x6x12 Douglas Fir almost 5years ago and they are in fantastic shape! Love the shou sugi ban on yours, I wish I had done that!
Where I garden in zone 5A, I usually get 3 years out of douglas fir raised beds. I converted a few to a Vego metal 4' x 8 ' and 17" high. I love the height and easy to assemble, plus a 20 year warranty. I may try the linseed approach as well. Thanks.
Good morning,
Thank you for constantly providing us with useful garden knowledge.
Many blessings
I always enjoy these videos!
If you use cinder block, it retains heat and radiates that heat during the night. It can be bad if you want to grow cold weather crops, but if you are growing heat loving crops, it can prevent them from freezing in cold weather.
I love seeing your dog in your video. What an adorable baby! Thanks for the great info too!. ✌️ ✌️
Thank you for the info Jack. Im about to start building a 4 x 8 x 2 feet raise garden using cedar from Lowes . It was not that muych more than treated wood. Also, to fill the planters , can I use top soil from say a masonry place that sell cubic sized top soil and mix with compost and manure? Thanks again
Pressure treated lumber is fine to use. They no longer use dangerous chemicals like arsenic or chromium.
Are wood pallets chemically treated???
Jag you are amazing. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge!
love your quick tips thanks
The biggest mistake is wasting water on a plant that isn’t growing 😍
The EPA banned arsenic-treated PT wood in 2004,
and the products available today are completely safe
from raised garden beds to children's playhouses
I use cedar for my raised beds.
Ugh…don’t you hate it when you’re doing a video and your dog at 0:53 does a videobomb? 😂😂
hi my ground soil is river bed can i make this soil better to grow veg in by added veg peel etc.. or well it not work ?? any help will be great thanks
Could you do a video om how to deter rats from your vege garden, compost, etc?
I think they stopped treating pressure-treated wood with toxic chemicals in the early 2000's. Other woods probably look better but as far I understand, what you buy today is fine for raised vegetable beds. Not saying one way or the other, but everyone should do their own research.
This was so helpful!! Thank you! Also your dog is so adorable!!
Ok

Here in Australia it's a good idea to check what treatment wood has before using for a garden bed. CCA treatment is copper, chrome, arsenic. I recommend avoiding that if you want to grow food.
Some countries have banned CCA treated wood; but not us, so check at the hardware store before buying.
I watched your burning bed video. Does the burning help with the preservative. Or is it only decorative
Do not use Linseed oil and DEF not boiled linseed oil as it's toxic.100% Tung Oil is far more weather resistant and doesn't turn rancid while also protecting against mold and mildew unlike Linseed Oil. And don't use Boiled Linseed Oil as it's not food safe. You can mix citric solvent to help Tung oil dry faster (Linseed oil takes forever to completely dry unless mixed with chemicals). Just make sure it is 100% Pure Tung Oil as many big orange/blue stores and well known brands (watco/minwax) sell fake Tung oil. Simply look for 100%.
I used boiled linseed oil on my wood border for my garden. Is this ok?
Pressure treated is fine I just put a layer of 5 mil in between the soil and wood
I started a couple of raised bed gardens last spring. The kit I got was of cedar, 17" tall. Primarily the base was filled with some rotting oak and other old wood. On top of that were twigs/branches, and leaf litter and finally compost. (Hugelkultur method) This year I added more soil to fill in and refresh.
Surprisingly my herbs made it through winter, both culinary and medicinal! They're growing like gangbusters!
I will need a third bed for sure next year!
