Edible Flowers & Leaves for Salads or Cakes, easy to grow in Orange, Yellow and Other colors too. This Plant the Tropaeolum, commonly known as nasturtium, is a genus of roughly 80 species of annual and perennial herbaceous flowering plants. Here they grow almost wild, coming up on their own each year in last Winter growing all into Summer. Green plant comes up first, growing as a ground cover, and by April bursting into flower. Our Nasturtium plants came in with our woodchips, the seeds were there and we did not know it, come the following Spring after the Wood Chip load, the flowers and plants were growing in the pile of woodchips. Now the nasturtium plants come up each year, and more each year and by April are in full flower.

  1. I don’t think they’d make our Wisconsin winters. But I will see if the ones I planted last year come back. I hope they will. You make my day with your videos…like a piece of spring early! Thanks

  2. I have bought a seed pack of these to plant this year. Can’t wait to get thing growing here again. 😊

  3. Awwwww so sweet πŸ’œ 😊 🐦
Excellent system to feed banana trees. I never grew nasturtium. Very pretty flowers πŸ’ ☺

  4. We had nasturtium growing under our magnolia tree in Socal. We used both leaves and flowers in salads. When we'd have BBQs we'd put a big salad on the table and it was beautiful. People thought they were for decoration and were amazed to find they were edible. The taste is peppery like you said. I think it's similar to arugula. Great with ranch dressing!

  5. I winter sowed some of these but didn't know they were edibles. Good to know. I'll definitely use the flowers on a salad. Thanks.

  6. Oh I love how pretty the leaves look lining the salad bowl! I will copy that for sure. Lol. I have nasturtium growing too and I love it. I didn't have to do anything this year they came back on their own. I love the peppery taste too. Its a keeper for sure. πŸ˜ŽπŸ’•

  7. Hi Robbie I planted nasturtium last year and the hummingbirds loved them, I also put some in my salad, yours looks very healthy, I think it's from all the good food Gary feeds them.

  8. They are so plentiful I have been pulling them out. I feel slightly guilty but they overtake some of my plants. I like them better sauteed with other greens. I love arugula raw.

A few years ago I purchased hack from Renee's seeds call Tropical nasturtiums. Yellow, pink and subtle orange colors.

  9. You have definitely taught me something today, well you do on every video. I had no clue nasturtiums were edible. I will definitely plant some this year. I was wondering if you could share where you purchase yours Broccolini from. I would like to grow some. The baby Hummingbirds are precious! Have a great weekend

  10. Thank you for the new video 😊 we have banana plants here in our yard and I had never thought to mulch them. They grow like weeds here, but ours haven't produced bananas last year. I'm going to start feeding them now 😊 I love the nasturtiums! The flowers are so beautiful 🌺

  11. Yes they are gorgeous! Awww the little hummers, so sweet. Thank goodness you found them there and were able to prop up the bananas. 😊β™₯️

  12. I have a Nasturtium growing on my front porch in a container that has grown all winter here in zone 9b in Brookings, Oregon three miles from the ocean… all of my ones outback died out but I have collected at least a cup of seeds for this summer… They are spicy and that might be why no pest can be found on them… great for salad mixture and the flowers are beautiful and editable… Enjoy Oh yea! I found some growing in the cracks of the garden stones out back… Try them they are fun and great for kids to grow too!!

  13. I grew nasturtiums for my first time last summer. I planted them as companion plants to deter bugs. Then i learned they were edible. I was a little scared to try eating a flower, but i got brave. It reminds me of watercress which I LOVE. I want them in my vegetable and flower gardens from now on. They are beautiful AND delicious! Thank you Robbie for educating more people on this wonderful, beneficial plant.

  14. They are not perennial in Ind so I replant. I will save seeds this year. Kitty really is adorable. Thx Gary and Robbie. Love your channel.

  15. Hey Robbie,
We live sort of close to each other here in So Cal, so I wanted to see what you are going to do:
I keep hearing about the Salmonella outbreak affecting the wild birds here on the west coast. I’m just curious if you’re taking down your feeders like they recommend (they said until like 4/1)? It’s scary and sad to think about, but I guess we need to to protect our birds? I feel so bad thinking about not providing the food and water my β€œpets” are used to.😒 but I also don’t want to think about them getting sick and dying and that I might have contributed to it just because I gave them food and water.😞
What are your thoughts on this whole situation?

  16. Thank you for sharing! I bought 2 packs seed last year deferent color flowers, I love to eat flowers it test pretty good!

  17. Mine seem to be the perfect habitat for aphids, so I always have to pull them out. But yes they do reseed so I let them regrow and then pull them when the aphids take over again.

  18. I love the way you and Gary do things. I’ve learned how to make dirt compost. I love birds also

  19. I have very clay like tough soil here. I doubt it those would grow here where I live I'll check my stores here and plant them in ur famous bucket idea πŸ’‘
And those πŸ…πŸ… look delicious in ur πŸ₯— πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‰ thank u for showing and tell Gary I said hi ya and his 🍌🍌 look fabulous.

  20. I grew a couple plants last year- but going for more this year because I heard of a recipe to marinate the seeds to be like capers!!! Can't wait!

  21. I LOVE Nasturtiums!!!!! to look at, to eat, to dry and use in tea (flowers), making vinegar and tinctures! But mine do not reseed themselves so easily, may be our winters are too cold?

  22. Planted nasturtiums for the first time this year. I planted them for the medicinal qualities for inflammation. Can't wait til the seeds come up and they start blooming so I can try the flowers.

  23. I finally got backgrounder grow this year so thrilled! Nothing like the size of yours tho…but yes I put in salad yum & share w my pet bunny Dilly…she devours them🐰

  24. The other thing you didn’t mention is that nasturtium actually prefers poor soil. They wouldn’t like the nutrient rich totes, but they will often grow where nothing else will. I’ve heard that they actually improve the soil, too.

  25. Wow, your content continues to surprise and wow me, Robbie! This is over a year old, and it just popped up in my feed and WOW! Talk about an EYE OPENER! I never knew this plant’s leaves were edible, in addition to its flowers, and that it grows very easily and perfect as a ground cover or mulch around trees, and is so beautiful!! I’m buying seeds toDAY! Thank you so much. And aren’t those baby hummingbirds so adorable!!!??
