If you want to keep borderline tender plants safe, then use the space nearest to your house wall. Walls absorb sunlight during the day, and have some retained heat from your heating too, so it creates a micro-climate. Plants emerge earlier nearer to the house than further away. See how my plants emerge several weeks early if they’re kept in a pot close to the wall.

Usually less wind too! Well if your prevailing wind faces the window, it creates a little windless pocket
I imagine this is true in the UK where walls are generally built of bricks, which retain heat.
Very helpful thank you
I bring all my pots close to the house every evening as long as the nights are still cold! Grouping them also offers protection.
17C? That is pretty frugal heating!
I'm in zone 4b (USA) but I'm convinced the full sun section of the garden up against my house (south-facing side) is a zone 5 microclimate. Everything starts showing spring growth much earlier than the rest of my yard, and I've got a zone 5 lavender there that's survived at least 2 winters now (waiting to see if it's survived the third). It makes me want to try out other zone 5 plants just to see what I can get away with đ
Definitely noticed this too. The pelargoniums I grow in drain hoppers on the wall are perennials there! Thanks for the explanation đ
Great tip, I'm looking for somewhere that I might grow lettuces over winter. With a little plastic covering, I'll have a mini greenhouse đâ€
Yes, it's great to extend your tomato harvest in winter. Same with the galvanised fence too. You can over winter the peppers there too.
