Non-Native Milkweed Disclaimer: I live in Central Florida and according to the University of Florida IFAS, Tropical Milkweed is documented as “Not a Problem Species” with a recommendation to cut the plants down to the ground by December (in Florida). Since Monarchs in Central and South Florida are not part of the migratory population (they stay here year round), they need a food source for their caterpillars. The only Florida native milkweed that does not die back in late fall/winter is Asclepius perennis (aquatic milkweed). If you have experience with this milkweed, you know that it will not feed a lot of caterpillars. Which is why the use of non-native milkweeds is more common here and even more so in South Florida.

Sorry I’m late. Yay for the painted lady visitor! Also, keep in mind it’s relative the American Lady could also use some love if you don’t already have hosts! Also, I saw a huge moth on my drive home today… I should’ve stopped and caught him or her😂
Does your large crop walk in cage have a mesh small enough to keep out wasps and most caterpillar predators? I agree with the tropical milkweed.
I thought I was the only one that pets monarch caterpillars, 😅. I can't wait for them to arrive. I've been planting milkweed seeds like crazy.
I bought 10 mini plants in Lucas 2 weeks ago…they said it was asclepias tuberosa ..but they look like tropical milkweed…i amglad you talk about it as the cats are eating them… i have too many monarchs here in orlando and not enough food.. i know the birds and lizards eat them so that slow down the number of catterpillars.
Makes alot of sense what you said about tropical milkweed. And I honestly don't see how they can even count and track all them monarchs when there are alot in more than one place. Seems like your new little assistant is enjoying himself and fitting right in.
My opinion on the issue of Tropical Milkweed vs Native Milkweeds
One thing that bugs me a BIT about Tropical Milkweed's treatment is the notion that it's bad simply BECAUSE it's Tropical Milkweed. As you said, Tropical Milkweed is a native plant SOMEWHERE in the world and that place is Mexico. In the spring when Monarchs are waking up from their hibernation, they are feeding on the nectar plants and laying eggs on the Tropical Milkweed in that area. It is THEIR caterpillars that grow up into butterflies and that begin the migration back up North. So Tropical Milkweed most certainly has an important role in the Monarch Butterfly migration.
I don't know where every single person on the planet lives so I'm not gonna fly off the handle at them for using Tropical Milkweed in their gardens. They could be LOCATED IN Mexico for all I know!
It's much like how people treat plants that are considered "weeds". Because it's classified as such, then that means it's obviously "bad" and has no real value and therefore, people would rather it not exist or would not care if the entire species were to die out.
The main reason that I encourage people to plant native is because we are not only preserving the Monarch Butterflies themselves, but also that species of Milkweed. If areas where native Milkweeds grow and flourish are being bulldozed and poisoned by herbicides, I think it's safe to assume that their population is also in decline along WITH the Monarch's. The Milkweeds want to live and reproduce just as much as the Monarchs do and I feel it's important that we realize the value of the plant itself and not just the fact that it attracts the pretty butterflies that we love to see.
Another reason is that I want to avoid introducing yet another invasive species to a landscape. Every invasive plant species didn't start out that way. It wasn't until it got too out of hand for us not to notice, that they were marked as such. I don't want to plant Tropical Milkweed and let it reproduce in my area because I'm afraid that it might out compete other native plants that the wildlife here relies on, as Monarchs aren't the only insects in decline. Habitat Loss, Pesticide Use, and Invasive species affect ALL pollinators. Letting native species grow in your yard and produce seed to disperse throughout the landscape just sounds like a better way to rebuild the ecosystems that were destroyed.
Ringo made himself right at home! So cute watching him and Rei chasing each other around 😍😍😍
