Thanks! I have also noticed that buying online has a less expensive delivery price.
I wish I could buy steel containers, but it's too hot here in the low desert for them.
I have made some homemade potting soil with cow manure, peat moss, and perlite. The jury is still out on how well it works.
We filled half of the stock tank with glass jars and bottles before adding soil and worked very well for saving money and keeping our veggies chemical free.
I can't wait to see the layers of everything you put in it! I am so excited as if it were mine lol. I love the video!
My tractor supply gave me 50% off my cattle panel when I asked the manager if he had any dented ones…then I got a military discount too! My husband was embarrassed…but 2 for 1! Yes please!
Hello! Just wondering, what made you switch to this type of container from totes?? I just started watching so maybe you've mentioned something else in your videos.
I'm learning so much and excited to start composting. I'm just going to try and see what happens.. even though my area in WI got 8.2 inches of snow last in the last 24 hours. I have lots of material in my garage like dry leaves and plant material that are wintering in there. Love these videos!!
Robbie always dropping jewels of knowledge
I fill two wine half barrels with huge logs to save on buyung bag soil. I wounder if you can add biodegradable packing peanuts in a raised bed as filler? If you can get or HAVE rocks add them butnit will be heavy containers tompick up and move. I am going go buy my next mini pool and it will be a cattle drinking bowl or containers.
This is fabulous and so exciting, can't wait !! Lol
Can't wait to see what you plant here! I think I need one also! ☺
I really appreciate your videos and how you help us save money when gardening. I am from Texas, and I'm wondering about these metal troughs. Do they heat up? We have summers with over 100 degree weather for several months. Will these heat up the soil? Thank you.
Great tip on getting the shipping really cheap ! I look for dented items , too . If I were artistic , I would paint beautiful flowers & Hummingbirds all over that trough !
I wonder if the huglekulture approach (bottom layer of wood and shrubs) will work ok in a container w/o direct contact to ground (like your totes have). You may have to intentionally add soil microbes and worms – innoculate.
I bet your daughter would love one 😁
I'm definitely gonna share this
Hi Robbie, this is a fun project to watch. I filled mine 50% or more with large branches …then smaller ones, then lots of raked up 'stuff' from all the mesquite trees on the property. Kept filling until 2/3rd near the top. Added good homemade soil then a layer of purchased soil. It has worked great for going on 6-7 years now. Occasionally will add more soil, but I let the plants break down around the winter crops. They are sure a wonderful container to grow in, safe from almost 100% of the predators. It'll be fun to see what you do next.
Great info… But the plants only put down roots a foot, or 10 or 8" or even less, why not use a much shallower container?
Kitty❤
Yay Robbie & Gary…I’m happy you found such a good buy & there is nothing wrong about fpgetting a discount! I TOLD YOU GUYS about our neg
Oh my gosh, Robbie if I had them and especially more than one I would definitely not only put in branches and leaves like you said but also I would get my rake out if you still have any piles of woodchips that weren't all the way leveled out and pile them in their as much as you think it needs before putting in the soil. That's what I did with all my raised beds. I would never put in plastic or Styrofoam your absolutely right.
My Carolina Peaper red seeds came in the mail today 😃
I put Styrofoam peanuts in some of my buckets. What a mess. They are still there 10 years later. Oh my!!
Now you got 2 troughs
I filled my regular 4×4 raised beds with branches, palm fronds, cardboard and the previous seasons leaves before topping with bagged compost and a bag of soil. It can be done super cheap while making soil at the bottom over time. 😁 Have pruned roots on some trees I have in large pots that I did the same with and when I pulles them out, EVERYTHING was broken down after only TWO YEARS!!! Def not going to take 100 years when its under the soil and plants are seeking nutrients.
Our bagged soil is always wet and darn heavy. I'd throw my yard waste in and put 2 bags of mushroomsoil on top, $10.
I soak the smaller branches and wood chips in water for a day and use those in the bottom of my large pots. As the soil dries it pulls water from the wood. It helps in my semi arid environment.
Can it not cause too much nitrogen in the soil? I have filled totes with immature compost and my plants turned yellow.
Kitty says lemme see where can my Mommy plant my Broccoli.🥦🥦🥦🌱. What a great idea Robbie i cant wait to see where you put it and what you plant in it?? no matter where and what ?? it is going to be fantastic looking.😉✌
I lived in Baltimore MD for about 30 years. Because there is an insane amount of the claw foot bathtubs 🛀. Folks buy them and use them for raise beds. Plus they paint artsy fartsy pictures along the side that is exposed the garden.
Epic gardener on YouTube has a yard full of these containers & grows all kinds of veggies successfully 😊
A mini hugelkulture : )
I've had a Birdie's bottomless quite large raised bed (love it) for many years and when it was new I filled the bottom with organic materials from the garden and some hay bales – worked like a charm : ) The only downside was that I was so excited to get planted and I couldn't understand why my plants kept dying. You guessed it,it was composting (hot!) so I had to be a bit patient and let it cool down but it was the most the perfect growing medium in the end, and I don't think it took that long to break down. I usually cold compost so it was a bit of a surprise for me. Ha Ha.
Do you make your own soil mixture ? Or just the commercially made garden/ potting soil ? Thsnks
What do you do after the season or the beginning of the season- when all the scraps/plant matter is broken down under the original growing plants…. Do you res-soil? Empty containers and redo? Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
helo you 😊😊
This will definitely be on my mother's day and Christmas wishlist my kids always ask what I want now I know
Styrofoam!!! Yes 💡
Thank you for the great idea Robbie. I could use styrofoam to fill my huge pots. The weight is an issue for the balconies 🤗
Love these containers! I wish i had some more space to put one or two.
Can't wait to see this project from start to finish 😍🌟
Are you concerned about minerals leaching out into soil ?
Do u plan to place a liner ?
Think of
Organic = God -made
Synthetic = man- made
Hey Robbie, This is exactly what we were hoping to add to our garden this year. Thank you for your help. And I would like to add, praying for you and this crazy weather!!
It should not cost several hundred dollars to fill a raised bed, unless you do an oopsie and fill the entire thing with super premium soil and compost. I made that mistake once as a new gardener with a larger container that was big enough to be a small raised bed, even then it didn’t cost close to 70-100 dollars. The key is to fill with organic materials you can find around your yard, and layer like the hugelkultur. If growing in a smaller raised bed like this you can modify with smaller organic materials. The organic materials on the bottom will eventually break down an add nutrition to the soil. You top off the top of the raised bed with soil and compost. I would not use any chemical filled materials like styrofoam. If I was going to use something like this I would also need to drill plenty of holes in the bottom to make sure it drains properly. We live in a wet climate and good drainage is important.
What happened to using totes? Who can afford these?
