Dont buy the wilko stuff, its totally rubbish! I bought 2 bags, I've sown peas in it in my tunnel, and potted off some stuff, the other bag and a half I'm going to use to top off beds. we are lucky, we can get locally 3 60ltr bags of clover for £15, I'm going to make sure I have enough for next year as well!
Hi Ivan. Be careful with that supergrow compost. We had a bag left from last year and the seedlings have stalled in it. I potted on with some FBB in and they have set off again. Off course this years batch could be much better.
Thanks Ivan for the advice, on sterilising compost and on the cold weather. Will be going to Wilko and the range tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
I’m a C novice here, why can’t you just cut off the flowers in the Chinese cabbage?
Hi Ivan lucky here in N.Ireland only due -1 on wed night
Hi as most gardeners I’m choping at the bit to get some plants and seeds out. But as we are all aware of this weather at the moment it’s hard going. I keep thinking that in the next couple of weeks I might be able to but Mother Nature is still throwing a curve ball at us all as soon as it starts to settle down again I like others will be dizzy and tired with all the planting…. I wish you all luck in gardening
Bug clear ultra is good – buy the concentrate it's much more economical and it work
Calling for -10C here, brrrr.
Thanks Ivan and good luck waiting out the cold. I've heard about putting soil in the oven in an old aluminium roasting tray (you know the cheap ones you get in a pack of three?). You spray it with a little water and put it in for a time. Can't remember how long or what temperature but the information's online. That will also sterilise soil. I've used it in the past it works just fine as well.
Thanks for the mention Ivan! I'll be throwing boiling water over my compost next time I use it. Being infested with fungus gnats is really horrible. I asked online for some suggestions on treatments for them and the resounding response was Nematodes. I found you can buy them on Amazon and eBay, and they live for about 6 weeks and die off once their larvae food source disappears.
I was also suggested Pest Expert Flea Killer spray (Amazon) which supposedly kills the adults and stops them from reproducing.
I ended up buying The Mosquito Company Fungus Gnat Larvae Killer (Amazon). It contains Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) which is a bacteria that affects the larvae only and is harmless to the plants and humans. Apparently it's a bit slower than nematodes, so I'll see how I get on.
That said, these suggestions are more expensive (£10+) than the spray you have. Of course, boiling water is the cheapest solution!
Most of my red cabbage are doing great, Think i sowed them in October, .When that bad frost hit i thought they where going pop there clogs
If you like the supagrow it's at homebase 10 bags for £30 atm
Great video. Thanks for your time. New sub
Thanks Ivan, for this great update. Have a good week. Take care and all the best. Stevie
If you've got the storage space I always buy my compost at the end of the season for next season. Garden centres and DIY places like Homebase and B&Q always want to sell off their stock and tend to have multi-bag deals that are a lot cheaper.
Cheers Ivan Think I might go grab some bags of that compost looks quite good at a decent price can't wait to get out planting myself got my potatoes in last night as felt cold roll on bloody April 🤣
Hi Ivan, there’s no excuse for using chemical poisons mate.
Thanks for reminding me about compost deals, I will look this week. Where do you get your blue tubing and netting from and how do you attach it to your raised beds? I am just starting out and could do with some of that!
That Supagrow compost should not be used for seeds at all. I've bought some to fill my raised beds on the allotment but reviews are very damning! It's processed green waste (which I'm all for) but the nutrient content is not great. It's classed as a soil conditioner, not a compost. New plants stall or die in it! Might boost mine with fish blood and bone to try to keep things going. Beware!
If you have a Homebase near. Just got 10 50L bags of organic compost for £30
I have lost all my early seedlings in the greenhouse from heavy frosts in March before now. I tend not to put fragile plants on the plot till around April! Great video, great advice! 😊
Ivan, I harvested buckets of compost from bins and pots I filled with kitchen scraps and leaves summer and fall. The brassicas love the rich soil and cold weather. I found that the cold snap didn't kill all the dazzling blue kale seedlings and they're ready to be divided. Thank you for getting us all inspired. I turned 76 the 3rd of this month and just learning vegetable gardening. 😁
it was so cold this morning! There was frost on the inside of the greenhouse! this time of the year its like yoyo spring! got to be careful what goes out or in the greenhouse. I only have very hardy stuff out so its ok
Muy bien
paraffin heater i use
I bought 4 bags of that Supa grow compost from the range, but mine doesnt look at all like yours, its really wet and looks and feels like wet cement or quicksand, potted on my tomato seedlings into it and they all died overnight, not sure if I got a bad batch, but wont buy again
