Friday Morning Ramblings has been changed to Garden Ramblings. Today we tour the late winter garden and I discuss what I am doing with chaotic pruning, bed prep, polycarbonate/plastic sheeting, and some really early planting.

  2. Hey Gary! I hope you get those whiteflies under control before your growing season really kicks into gear. We had a whitefly nightmare in 2021. 2022 some still survived despite the bitter cold Michigan winters, but they only got to problematic numbers at the very end of the season. I plan to be vigilant with them this Spring. Next to the greedy groundhogs, whiteflies are the worst pest in our garden.

  3. I like the winter tours, it helps me understand the orientation of your beds. I like the idea of clean up, and prep for a new spring. Love the Farmhouse at Freetown Farm. Great space! What a wonderful education space! Oooo, a trip to Portugal! How awesome! Can't wait to see the seeds you brought home!

  4. Hello Gary, That was a great video. We don't feel so bad when we see you also have some cleanup to do. I like to be outdoors thinking about and planning the season. I already have radishes and dill started, old pepper plants are sprouting and cherry tomato cuttings from December have baby tomatoes.

  5. That is one thing i have to work out….my stress when it comes to the garden….especially with managing the pests.

  6. Thanks for reminding us to have fun, it’s ok if the garden isn’t perfect. You can argue that no garden is ever perfect! There are always problems to be solved!

I was out on that warm MD day moving wood chips into the garden, it was hard work as I had to move the chips from the bottom of my property! It’s always a good feeling to accomplish something, it will take a few more sessions to move everything and that’s ok!

  7. Gary I will be growing strawberries for the first time. I'm in New Jersey about 15 min from Manhattan N.Y. What do you recommend for the first time? June bearing, Everbearing or Day Neutral Thanks so much.

  8. You have a huge garden 😊,you are so lucky. I follow you since you live in your other property .My garden is big but not that big.

  9. I just planted about 150 Red Bearded Bunching onions into two starter trays, each with 12 cells. When they are ready for transplanting, rather than dividing them, I will break the clumps in half and plant them. It is a big time saver, and planting the bunching onions in clumps doesn't both them. I have wild onions growing in my yard growing in clumps that grow back every year—just harvest the tops, and leave the bulbs.

  10. Hi Gary. Will you be pruning your blueberries? My bare root blue berry bushes went into the ground last spring. They're still pretty small but there are some crossing branches and some branches that are way taller than the rest. Do you think it's a good idea to do some pruning this year or let them be until they're a bit older? Thanks!
