Award winning garden author and semi-retired nurseryman Doug Green (http://www.douggreensgarden.com) shows you how he prunes this coleus (and other plants) to thicken them up and improve the look of the planter.

Doug had planted some really nice impatiens in the same pot and the coleus were threatening to take over, shading out the nice blooms. Green shows his practical side in removing the offending plants and then shows you what they’ll look like (in another container he did this to a few weeks previously) so you won’t feel badly when you whack the plants either. This is part of the practical gardening skills Doug is demonstrating in his Gardener’s Journal series of quick and dirty garden videos. He carries his iPhone around the garden shooting whatever he’s doing, uploading it here for you to see.
