Here we go again, with some more super popular music coming from Japan. Kawaii metal or Japanese metal seems to be taking over right now, today I’m reacting to Passcode and their sone Taking You Out. I have to say…this one is a difficult one for me. If I’m missing something, please enlighten me in the comments.

Eh up Justin. You like hard music synths? Something you can also dance to? With that sprinkle of magic music dust? Well I certainly recommend this. Not going anymore but still unbeatable imho. Check it out and enjoy. Have fun.

  2. I love to hear women employing the overwrought physicality in music we’ve become accustomed to from men. But… the goofy autotune slapstick sound just brings all the joy to a screeching halt for me. Why do artists continually fall back on this toy sound? Don’t they realize the message it sends to listeners? “We can’t sing for shit so listen to this ridiculous Casio voice instead.” I’ll never get past it.

  3. Reminds me of tape loading manic miner on my zx spectrum. After 4 mins of tape screeches, the load failed.

  4. The first time I heard PassCode they reminded me of Cardiacs. Not because they sound anything like Cardiacs, really, but because they have a similar habit of throwing a dozen different ideas into each song, and the transitions can be simultaneously quite jarring and immensely satisfying. Anyway, if anyone's reading this and thinking of checking out more PassCode, I recommend Club Kids Never Die and One Step Beyond (not a Madness cover, sadly).

  5. Also, what's with those goddamn visual cliches? Crop top and school uniform Asian girl stereotype style? Really? 🙄

  6. Hey Justin, have you heard Ben Folds' cover of your song 'Get Your Hands Off of my Woman'? Could you please comment or review it? Thank you.

  7. Hmmmm…..Kawaii = Cute Metal 😮😮😮??? 😂 worth it for just those last 5 seconds.. you are such fun love it

  8. The actual question is … how can anyone NOT listen to them? A great band with a long history, formed in 2013. I have loved this song and this performance since it came out. J-Music is taking over. It's about time people noticed 😉 .

  9. Yeah, this is a hard pass for me. Amazing production on the video, but no discernable music here.

  10. Just came on here to say RIP Jeff Beck, but I'm sure Justin will have more on this.

  11. I enjoy your commentary and analysis of the various songs and bands. I wish you would play at least a Verse and Chorus uninterupted before you start talking about a song instead of chopped up with commentaries after just a few seconds so we could get a better feel for what you are and will be talking about. If playing too long of a clip creates copyright infringement and the video being pulled then I understand.

  12. Anyone ive know that listens to 'heavy shouty' music are, on the whole, calm, collected, grounded, rational types. Always found this curious.

  13. You should check out Necry Talkie. Listening to them always puts me in a good mood. I'd recommend the song "chakapoko"

  14. Please check out the blackgaze genre (black metal/shoe haze) via the band Deafheaven, I recommend the songs Dream House, Sunbather or Pecan Tree from the album Sunbather!

  15. It has everything.

Auto tune. Overly compressed stuff. Distortion. Melodic vocals. Growling. Basically it has no idea what it is. This shit belongs in the bin if you ask me.

  16. The Li-lili-li-li-li bit reminds me of SOAD. There's a lot of good fun to be had from the intros to Japanese Anime. I'd recommend Gurenge by LiSA for the Demonslayer series. Also My Hero Academia opening rocks out too

  17. You need to check out Hanabie, a Japanese female quartet who started as a 'Maximum The Hormone' cover band. They have a very interesting mix of melodic vocals harmonizing with hardcore screaming. It does not hurt that their musicianship is pretty decent. Their videos are quite visually entertaining, humorous, and unusual. "We Love Sweets" and "Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now" are absolute riots.

  18. This comment section did not disappoint at all so I just wanted to thank you all for the laughs.

  19. They look like a 'Babymetal' rip off!
I'd rather listen to Sumetal and The Kami Band do Chocolate and Headbanger than this poor imitation.

  20. You should listen to Vintersea, Spiritbox or Arch Enemy for some great bands that isn't novelty stuff.

  21. This is the first time Justin has heard good music. 😐

  22. So so so many amazing bands coming out of Japan, especially out of modern/post-modern metal/rock. Many of my personal favorites might be a bit too extreme in their approach, so not for everybody. But many of the more popular bands could have massive appeal i.e. One OK Rock, My First Story, Eve, Ling Tosite Sigure, Nothing's Carved in Stone. My personal favs are DIMLIM, XAAXAA, and i.D.A. which are more underground. Nonetheless, I come to spread the word of modern Japanese music to the West.

  23. I'll stick to Band Maid. The women in Band Maid play their own instruments and play them well. Passcode and Baby Metal are just vocalists with a backing band. Not my thing. But you do you and support what you dig.

  24. You should listen to Capsule, Perfume, Coltemonikha, or any other Japanese acts where the music was produced by Yasutaka Nakata. Not metal but they WILL blow your mind. Polyrhythm by Perfume is a good starting point, Control by Capsule, and many more to discover.

  25. Check out 'Birthday Cake' by American Japanese band 'Cibo Matto' (the band name is Italian for Crazy Food – their first album was food-related) from 1996 for a polarising song. I love it and it featured in the soundtrack of platformer skater game Jet Set Radio Future on Xbox in 2002. Sean Lennon was a member of the band from 1997 to 2002.

  26. Time to go back to Basics and Save Rock & Metal.

BTW….Great Interview with RICK BEATO 😁👍🏻 and

  27. I love Passcode. They are a good example of how Japan is pushing the boundaries of music even if it doesn't always hit the mark for everyone. If you like them then you should also check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which has a similar style but is a male band.

  28. Love Passcode, glad you listened to them. I would like to recommend you try Hagane as well, another excellent Japanese band. You may like.
