I am looking forward to the kale trial!
I have 1 plant of dazzling Blue kale – pest doesnt bother it much after it’s stablished. I love it, I live in a HOT climate and it’s not bitter.
I also grew red russian, which is attacked by aphids… but what I can eat it’s very sweet tasting and the stems are very tender and crunchy.
I have thousand heads and covolo nero seedling and Im waiting for my Portuguese kale seeds 🙂
Thank you for pointing out De Nieuwe Tuin, I placed an order there today. If you like dried beans, I'd definitely recommend the Good Mother Stallard beans they have in their catalogue. I grew these last year and they are THE BEST beans I've ever eaten in stews and soups! Not so exciting harvested for just the green pods, but the flavor of the mature beans is truly outstanding (and I grow a LOT of bean varieties; these really stood out). Happy gardening! 🙂
Nice portuguese 😍. I love Kale Tronchuda Portuguesa
Vera the sound on this vid is off, your voice only comes from the left speaker. Was not the best, with a head set on 🙂
It was fun to see what seeds you will be planting. I am going to try growing Luffa gourd and the blue Meconopsis poppy. Maybe with a heat mat they will germinate!
Ik kreeg gisteren mijn fruit struiken/ bomen binnen. Super exciting om het uit te pakken. 😁🤩
As seedstore's i have Vreeken seed's, Bolster seed's, and a local shop called: van der Plancke
Looking forward to the Spring and your advice.
Ik heb je zoon niet gezien. Maar ik vind hem leuk. 👍🏼 zijn voorkeuren gewoon laten merken. En die blooopers. Doen! 🤣
Yes tronchuda very well pronounced! I’m a beginner gardener, making my own experiences. What I have concluded is that because is so tender (traditionally for Christmas night with bacalhau!) it’s more prone to slugs, snails, or worms?? So I didn’t had the pleasure to taste It much! 😉
Goood afternoon! It was a pleasure to see all these seeds unboxed! So nice!!! Congratulations! The seed companies have some nice products, too!
I live in Portugal and can share some experience about the Couve Tronchuda. It is a great vegetable, they let it grow quite big and then cut all the "head" (it doesn´t really form a head like cabbage), it seems more like an enormous pak choi, not too opened, with juicy stems and midribs and sweet flavour, at least from the ones I have experienced around my province, all of them home grown!). It can get quite big if you let it, and here it is used as a vegetable for soups. I also sauté it (with chili flakes or garlic, or with smoked hot paprika). It is really popular boiled as well, with potatoes and cod fish (typical comfort food, or food for celebrations like Christmas,). Cod fish here is on the menu always, and usually accompanied with some other Brassica type plants, so great food choice, and very nutritional too, Portuguese people are very traditional in this aspect, and I find it very healthy and nice.
I love your videos, and wish you and your family all the best! Have a great year! Happy Gardening!
has anyone use the discount code? It doesn't work with me 🙁
Great selection!
Some ideas for the Kale comparison trial;
Partial shade vs full sun
Heat and drought tolerant Vs Cold tolerant
Taste – spring ( baby leaves), summer, and fall( after couple of mild frost)
It’s so nice watching everyone prepping for spring as I’m nearing winter. I’m excited to see how everything grows 😊
It was inspiring tot watch your video. Caught me with the urge to sow right now and sow a lot.
Heard you say to use the rattle snake snap as a dry bean. Which is great, but don't forget to eat the bean as a green bean too. It's one of my favorite! It's such a chrispy bean, even after (short) cooking.
Nice seed haul! A few days ago, when i came home with the seeds i bought, my girlfriend thought i was crazy for getting so many, I should show her your seed collection 😀
Sad to hear that they're closing, especially now that "good" seed suppliers are in short supply.
Tronchuda – we actually call it Portuguese cabbage. It's can be boiled in water and then sauté with garlic. It's also eaten just boiled, and then each person seasons it on their plate with olive oil and vinegar. It's very traditional to eat it with codfish on Christmas eve. And my favorite is to add it to migas, which is a recipe using leftover bread.
Gardening is an experiment, never stop trying new things!
How lame not to have pictures on the seed envelopes….ignorant, also from a marketing perspective.
lol you sound just like me!
You are so amazing. I love what you do.
Love the handy son support! 🙂 And its so nice to have someone in my climate show their experiments. Thank you!
Good video 👍
I never realised there were so many kale varieties!
It’s very difficult to get hold of single colour antirrhinums
Iwant seeds can you give me
I would not have been able to restrain myself from opening those packages!!
I have ordered from Jansen before and I was kinda dissapointed there were no pictures on the packages. So I ended up cutting out the pictures from their catalogue an sticking them on my packets 😅
It's so hard, there are so many options out there and it's so exciting to try something new! I inherited my father-in-law's collection too, so earlier this year I sorted my seed collection and organised it into a folder using photo pockets and dividers to create sections. I have been much more restrained with my seed purchasing this year, but couldn't resist a few new things! (New to me anyway!) I can't wait to get started, but we're having a cold snap here in the UK so have a few more weeks to be patient!
Have you considered just starting all the seeds and then trade with or give away to all other interested gardeners in your area. If all of them are open pollinated, you may wind up with new varieties that are best adapted to your environment and/or have I treating properties in terms of color and taste.
i ordered the tronchude kale last year because i read that it's leaves taste like cabbage but can be cut and come again unlike cabbage…so we now grow it because my son loves the taste. ☺️
Peter Bauwens …De Nieuwe Tuin …is already retired.
I ve grown kale Scarlet last year more as an ornamental. Some of them could overwinter …went in flower in spring …which was spectaculous …a bee magnet and you get a lot of new fresh seeds.
The portuguese kale is probabely used for caldo verde.
Kind regards,
Marcus
