Not all seed catalogs are equal. They all provide basic ordering information, but some excel with the amount of gardening and plant information they provide. Seed catalogs with excellent planting and care instructions can improve overall gardening knowledge for all gardeners, especially new gardeners. Gardener Scott discusses five of the best garden seed catalogs. (Video #234)

  1. Baker Creek's "Whole Seed Catalog" is gorgeous, huge and has much more info.

  2. Good info Scott. One of my favorites the last couple years is Botanical Interests catalog. Take a look at a seed packet at Phelan Gardens sometime, and you'll get an idea of the immense amount of information they provide. And their prices are really low as well.

  3. Thanks for the helpful video! I've made quite a few seed catalog requests. It looks like Baker Creek's website is down temporarily until tomorrow morning due to a high volume of orders and covid-19 reasons.

  4. Went to order Baker creek’s catalog but their entire site is shutdown because of how many orders they’ve gotten with covid. It should be open by 5 pm tonight though.

  5. I like Baker Creek and buy a lot from them but I have noticed the same problem with info, especially not having days to maturity. One good thing is that if you like something, you can go online to see customer reviews and they sometimes mention this information.

  6. Hello! I'm a new subscriber to this channel and was wondering whether you have discussed any good guide or how-to books for the more serious beginning gardener. I've grown up with gardeners all my life, but this is the first real season that I will have my own yard to build/maintain a garden. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Seed catalogs are the harbingers of spring; the color in the gray of the winter. I love to pore over my new seed catalogs while it's cold and dark outside. Soon, we'll again have dirty knees, sweat on our brows, dirt under our fingernails….How fortunate we are to have an appreciation of gardening.
Thanks for this compelling video Gardener Scott.

  8. I like territorial because of the information as a new veggie gardener. I’ve also stumbled upon the southern exposure seed exchange because it provides info on what grows well in my zone, information on disease resistant seeds and it has pictures. I will sign up for the Johnny catalog it looks good thanks Gardner Scott for the video

  9. There is one thing about most catalogs I wish they'd correct. I really wish they would start including latin names. A lot of times for medicinal properties ya need a specific variety. Even baker creek fails at this. They list the latin on known medicinals but not so much on others. Baker creek doesn't always tell days to germination or harvest and all that on the pack. I get that it will vary but a general idea would be great.

  10. Fedco's catalog is 100% recyclable, a very important aspect of gardening. Shiny catalogs with great pictures don't recycle very well if at all……you might as well just buy your vegetables from the grocery store.

  11. Being a newer gardener I've only had/seen the Botanical Interests catalogue, which is great and contains a lot of information. But I'm anxious now to get my hands on some others for more variety and for comparison. Thank you for opening my eyes to all the possibilities. I've ordered some more catalogues from Baker Creek (super popular I see) and Seed Savers Exchange. I'll probably look up Johnny's and Prairie Moon as well, to name a few. Thanks so much for sharing GS!

  12. Baker Creek is so busy this year they literally had to shut down the website temporarily to catch up on backorders!

  13. I requested several of the catalogues you mentioned but have only received Johnny’s – which is packed full of useful gardening info! Unfortunately, many of their small quantities of seed are already sold out. I did a little looking around and discovered that there are many seed stores on Etsy. I was able to purchase all of the seeds I wanted from Johnny’s at cheaper prices, and even found a store that sells “try it” packets of 5-10 seeds for $1! Perfect for me to try new things without paying a lot for something I may not grow again. I also really like Botanical Interests, which has great growing info on their packaging and I can buy directly from my local garden center for the same price as online, without the shipping. Thanks for a great starting point, Scott!

  14. I got my very first seed catalogue a few weeks ago, from a company here in Canada called West Coast Seeds, and I am in love. Full of information and great photos and advice. It would be a good one for your Canadian viewers!

  15. G. Scott I thought you should be aware about Johnny's Selected Seeds. I went to the website today and found this: "Due to increased order volume and our ongoing COVID precautions, we are temporarily unable to accept home garden orders…." I will reopen for home gardeners on Feb 10th and 11th. Thought you should know since you mentioned it in your video. The more you know 🙂 Take care.

  16. I would love to have more catalogs coming my way. Are these free or do they require an order to start receiving them?

  17. 🤭 Reviewing 15 Catalogs?
    😯 How did I miss 7? 🤷‍♂️
🤫 … However, the video is lovely. 💕
😃 Thank you so much, wonderful reviews. 😘
    😏 Off to catalog(s) ordering! 👍

  18. Thank you – just placed catalog orders for all of those wonderful seed companies
