“I think Portland has put out it’s great tea weather.”

With the cold weather, the Portland Japanese Garden wants visitors to know that there is a warm oasis at the Umami Cafe, with tea services encompassing all the traditional arts of Japan. Gena Renaud makes the traditional Japanese pastries.

“What’s lovely is that you still have the garden out there but you’re in here. It gives you the kind of peaceful place to just meditate on what you’ve seen.”

“The gray skies outside make coming in here all the more cozy with a warm cup of tea and a little sweet,” External Affairs Officer Lisa Christy said. The thoughtful experience honors our diverse cultural community. It’s what the garden is designed to do.

“It’s born out of a belief that cultures can come together. Understand one another, and that leads to peace.”

  1. Wonderful memories here in the 90s – definitely visit If you don't have to drive there or have any valuable belongings – a must see destination in Porrland; very romantic. Locals would visit but the rules, auto prowl, and unpredictability make things a bit different
