We have had some crazy weather over the last few days. It started with a tornado warning with almost hail like rain that broke some plants followed by three days of almost 100 degree temperatures, which is not typical for Chicago in June.
I wanted to show how my garden faired and some things I need to do going forward to protect my garden from extreme weather conditions.

So glad there wasn’t too much damage to your garden. It’s looking beautiful this morning!

The tornado sirens sounded for over 2 hours that day. The sky turned green and then black. Before the rain started I ran around covering my garden beds with .6 mil plastic which only collapsed under the wind and rain and bent my tallest veggies.. but nothing died. Good to have a gardener that goes through the same conditions I go through. Aside from the heat, don't forget the 55 degree nights. This year's weather is crazy. Appropriate vid for this season!
The ground around us is all cracked from the dry hot air despite us watering first thing in the morning. Can only imagine how much hotter it would be on a rooftop. We need to get one of those fan misters to help cool the air or something.
I can envision a wooden arbor with a horizontal top. I don’t know if you can do something like that, if it would be too heavy for the rooftop.
I love it when gardeners show problems due to weather. We are not alone👍
I was going to say that if I was your neighbor I would install a shade cloth for you.
The hydrangeas don't look like anything else but sunburn on the leaves!
Happy gardening my friend 💚🌱😄
Hi Bethany, all the coleus that I bought said that they could be put in part sun but they were not happy there, even in morning sun, and I had to move all of them into the shade. I hope all of your plants recover but your garden still looks great.
Hi Bethany, In Nebraska it has been crazy weather since March, or maybe even earlier. My tomatoes look terrible. Nothing is growing because of the cold weather. We haven't had much rain at all, wind almost every day; some winds of 75 mph. Some days temps are normal or high and nights low in the 40's and 50's. Around mid June we were hit with 100 plus degrees for two weeks. It looks like it will be "normal" next week, except the nights will be under 60 degrees.
