Everyone knows Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Persona. But there are a ton of great JRPGs out there that are a bit more obscure — great games that deserve a much bigger audience. Let’s take a look at my Top 5 JRPGs on the Nintendo Switch that are a ways off the beaten path; not the biggest, not the most popular, but they can easily stand toe-to-toe with the JRPG greats!

Ordered the Caligula Effect games! My top 5 are Langrisser 1 and 2, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Y's 8, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi, and Shining Resonance Refrain.
Great video & list! I have a stack of Switch JRPGs I still need to play (including many on this list š). But I guess my addition would be the Atelier games (particularly Ryza).
Also have you played the 2nd Caligula Effect game or just the first one? I currently have just the second one and heard great things.
Branden, this was such a lovely video. Such wit, humor, and insight. I have truly enjoyed watching you grow as a creator. ā„
Solid list! Could not agree more with your number 2 pick. Love that series. Iām also curious what your thoughts are on Rune Factory 5. I have it in my backlog but havenāt gotten around to playing it.
Fabulous list Branden, I enjoyed watching! š
Great video! Love seeing lists like these – maybe Bug Fables would be one of my off the beaten path JRPGs…haha not sure!
I'm glad I found this channel of yours while browsing through Switch games. Quality content here. +1 subscriber. š
I love Crystar! Thank you for mentioning it – I thought I was the only one who knew! Same for Caligula and its sequel (and Monark). I have all the HD2D games and canāt wait for Octopath 2. Im loving all the re-releases Square are knocking out. Subscribed and belled as we live in the Kiseki bubble š«¶
liked and subscribed for being honest about lowering the difficulty for the story and describing yourself a baby because of it hahahaha just like me
Love this video mate, liked and subbed
Awesome video! I am for sure going to get to Live-A-Live. I gotta get through Ragnarok and that will be the last big hearty meal on my plate fit for a god. After that I wanna do a metroidvania or platformer though and then dive into Live-A-Live. Harvestella came out with a whimper and I have not heard much. Look forward to your thoughts when you finish it. It looks like a good game and now this gem is looking all shiny!
Just found this channel and thus this first video i watched of yours its very well done and the explanations do a good job getting me interested in the games without spoiling anything important
ill definitely have to take a look at these games soon
i don't love a particular Genre more then others like you i look for a good story, characters and things that can make me feel something,
though good Game Mechanics that are fun and beautiful visuals wither or not they anything new are good at helping as well,
but RPGs and JRPGs are ones that do it most consistently i mean there 3 games i recommend to everyone for simple how much i enjoyed them though one of them i only found one person who has heard about it maybe cause its a xbox360 exclusive which as far as i know has no digital copy to download, according to internet it is backwards compatible with xbox one though,
its a Gem i Adore called Infinite Undiscovery i have no idea if it was every popular but no one i know or talked to IRL or online every heard about it save one single friend of mine
there so much i could say about it but i not as good at explanations and the like as you are so ill just say it alot of fun has amazing story and great characters i enjoyed with no character feeling like a weak link in the story even the antagonists are enjoyable, such a fun game ill never forget
the other 2 games ill never forget that are as good or better are Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Tales of Berseria but both of those are well known or at least from well known franchises either way for me personally no other games have ever come close to these 3 is just how good they are some have beaten then in one category or 2 sure but not overall but that just me and my tastes (the Bungie Halos games also a fav of mine but Halo also what got me into gaming as a whole so Nostalgia plays a factor there)
anyways just wanted to talk about some games i enjoy and one game i wish was talked about more and to tell you ty for video ill be checking these games as soon as i can and to keep up good work ill be looking forward to more of your videos. you have earned your self a new Subscriber
sorry for wall of text i go on tangents alot lol
Harvstella looks like a more mature Rune Factory. I always thought the story was kinda the weak point of tune factory games..
Fantastic video man very insightful funny loved when you made the statue insult you Nice man very nice You did a great job with this lots of good recommendations lots of great RPGs Definitely a good good time Way to go brother Keep up the great work you'll probably hit thousands of subscribers very soon
crystar is on ps4 to
Iām interested in getting into the trails series and wondering whatās the best place to start from whatās available on the switch? I really wanna get from zero but I donāt want to miss out on a bunch of insider stuff of previous games. Thanks and great video!
Harvestella is a mess. So much text, so much fucking text.
And holy shit male quest npcs. They have so puncheable face.
Combat system is also fucking bad….. and there is no healing class, so you are stuck on eating food all the time, go back farming to make more food and continue slowing your progress down.
And FINAL FINAL FINAL boss …. fucking sucks…its just dodge dodge attack for 1-2 sec dodge dodge non-stop. Yeah you have to use a right choices in game so you get a *good ending*.
let me disagree on the fact Crystar is visually unappealing… in fact it's a stunner. In terms of gameplay it is really poor, true, but it's a spike chunsoft action game and spike is the progenitor of all visual novels so strong in the narrative dept., not necessarily in the gameplay. Now that I think about it, in that same year, Spike released AI the somnium files 1 (I see u have the collector of the second) and Zanki Zero, both remarkable games! Crystar was maybe the weaker. If u never tried Zanki I encourage u to do so it is memorable.
What trails game would you recommen starting with?
You sold me Harvestella. Didn't know Go Shiina does the soundtrack for this game.
Branden, never touched a Trails game. Which should I start with on the Switch? Thank you
