Our last planting of turmeric in the backyard garden took forever to sprout. This has created quite the issue with weeds and grass thriving all amongst our turmeric plants. How can we get rid of all these weeds?
Join us as we try to determine a solution for our turmeric so that they can grow and thrive during these warmer months. We’ll also give a tour of our raised bed garden and tell you what we’ll be planting in those as fall approaches.

If you prune off the spent flower stalks on your snaps, you are more likely to get another round of blooms. I had a round that lasted for two years- blooming four times with little effort in 7B in Alabama. The overwintered blooms were much larger than the first round.
I have found that raised beds need much more watering than in the ground! Here in Texas, that is a big thing since we have been hitting between 95-100° since June.
Got cardboard, paper bags and free biomass like the corn stalks or leaves to put on top? Why expensive chips with dye?
I would have used CARD BOARD nailed down with sticks from non pine tress, that way you could just plow it under next spring ALSO a lot of you tubers claim you get fresh wood chips free or cheap from tree companies , If your going to do LARGE RAISED BEDS check out using wood , leaves , and other stuff that will turn into mulch over a long time to save on buy compost and top soil . I think it's called Hugelkultere. Another plant you could grow for mulch and chicken feed every body raves about is called COMFREY.
Turmeric likes water, lots of it….otherwise it won't sprout. Same thing happened to me, but I'm growing it indoors because of our cool weather…frost will be upon us by the end of September. Pull the weeds out….makes no sense to water or fertilize them. Colored mulch around vegetables….I don't think so. Trim the Thyme to help it sprout out fresh.
Ive heard bad stuff about what they use for wood in those mulch bags. Ok for landscape but wouldnt use it on food that you are consuming. Also when the weeds go to seed you are gonna have same weeds next yr and probaly the next. Try to eradicate before they go to seed.
I would love to see your raised beds and have you thought about hugelkultur? I'd love to see someone do this method here. We're in northeast Georgia and I can't find people doing it here either. It is kind of wild that there's no chip drop in an area with so much forestry. We can't get it either, we just have to flag down the guys with the power company. The wood chips they leave are worth the effort though. I would have never dreamed how quickly red clay can turn into a deeper brown in as little as three months. Organic Ginger and turmeric can be a very lucrative product at the farmers markets as well as herbal stores. I sure hope it works out well for you. I can't wait to see your raised beds; as we age it sure gets harder to get on your knees and pull those weeds. Thank you so much for taking us along. I'm learning about growing zones even within my own state. Exciting indeed!!
Have you heard of canned watermelon? https://youtu.be/VRDv0r5NdyI
I grew a Ghost Pepper this year for the first time and it was loaded. I tried one and all I can say is I no longer have that plant. The only way I can adequately describe the experience is to think back to Anakin Skywalker as he lay helpless next to the lava river.
the raised beds be ok. I would thought you would put them somewhere else besides using one of you dream bed.
I thought you were in the never mulch, wheel hoe is God camp? Cardboard before mulch is put down. It really does work.
Couldn’t you have
Wet the row and pulled the grass?
Branching out I see. I just harvested my first round of patty pan squash. I'd never eaten it before…OMG. I think I may be done growing yellow squash. It was delicious! Those raised beds look like they need some more perilte my man.
Straw would break down faster and not and any potential chemicals. No more colored mulch broski lol
Get shredded hardwood mulch from Lowes. It breaks down over time and improves your soil with no added dyes.
Good luck with the mulch! I struggle fighting Bermuda grass. Now I am trying to cut down the weedy grass. Then putting brown paper over it. Top with mulch. I plant something pretty tough like cow peas by cutting a small hole through the paper and will see if that helps improve things
I was trying to find your worm bed video again but couldnt. I use to dig wigglers when i was a kid for my grand dad and i remember him having a layer of peanut shells that he fed them. They lived in a pecan orchard. so ive been feeding all my peanut shells as we eat them to the top ofmy new worm bed, plus my scrap veggies, paper plates, some expired plant material as well. How did your peanuts do? First time i grew them and they did great, even those that the weeds took over. Still got to finish getting them up!
Never grew turmeric, but yours look mighty fine to me. Hope it gives you lots& lots😛
You might dead head those snapdragons to get them to bloom again, right now thet're focused on making seed.
You need a bagging lawn mower.
Free mulch.
I have always waited until after first freeze to harvest horseradish. My understanding is it tastes better.
I would've spent a half hr pulling that grass before it ever went to seed.now it'll grow in the mulch
