NEVER TOO SMALL: Furniture Dealer’s Mid-Century Attic Apartment, Barcelona – 34sqm/366sqft

Inspired by his love of mid-century design, architect and furniture dealer Jacobo Valentí of Casavells estudio completely transformed this 34sqm attic apartment using a combination of original mid-century furniture he had been collecting for years and cleverly adapted Ikea pieces. Valentí redesigned the kitchen in two separate opposing sections, creating a central corridor in the middle of the apartment. He also split the bathroom in two, keeping the toilet near the entrance and adding an open shower next to the new terrace, converted from 3sqm of existing indoor space. The versatile, open plan living area is used for sleeping, dining and working and contains a dual purpose ikea sleeper sofa with a custom wood frame. This acts as a dining table/desk seat and guest bed when needed. For storage, a customized original Danish unit that sits opposite the bed is paired with a mirror-clad Ikea closet. A projector, mounted above the bed, projects directly onto the far wall. Meticulously selecting and customising his furniture allowed Valentí to balance the old with the new and give his home a unique second life.

    I love this so much. Feels like a luxurious private carriage on a train. The terrace and the continuation of the yellow tiles inside is 🤌. The vintage furniture and matching customisation absolutely makes the space, and shows what a difference wood finishes can make. This is 100x better than every single “lemme just put naked plywood everywhere” apartment.

    Thank you for bringing this episode to us!
    I love the idea of using furniture (e.g. from IKEA), which are easily accessbile for anyone and building custom design on them. I feel like I could make use of these ideas in my home as well. Contrary, to many other project, where everything is custom made (which is still awesome!), which would require expert craftsmen and lots of money, hence extremely hard to achieve for average viewers to replicate/inspire from.

    I find this space to be cluttered and oppressive. Rather than the typical open plan, airy properties, this feels very claustrophobic. Many of the finishes look a little low spec, good example the doors and hinges.

    I'm a sucker for Mid-century vibes so this is easily a new fave. Rough bathroom position but I respect it. I do have to ask where the speakers for the vinyl player are. Stay warm Captain.

    You can't fool a good dog. Ron is obviously living his best life — and we can see why. Such comfortably creative use of space, incorporating pieces that have significance for the owner and making quietly surprising use of space. This one is a lasting favorite.

    i appreciate this space and his honesty in using Ikea furniture. the design & furnishings are very functional and purposeful. it’s very interesting to keep the shower stall open, but i do like the yellow tile ☀️
