I would love to gather some tree seedlings on our land and transplant them to my yard. Is that possible and how and when should I transplant them. I am in South Mississippi. Thanks π
Good morning Jim and Holly!
Good Sunday morning!
Last fall I began to notice and pull out what I thought was a weed. Then this fall after raking my leaves from a complete shade garden bed, I noticed it has almost tripled in spread (Iβm guessing it is invasive) and have been told itβs called βCrane Fly Orchid.β Any suggestion on how to control or eradicate before it takes over this Hosta and fern bed?

Good morning, Jim and Holly. I have a few soft touch hollies that I got on clearance. Itβs too late to plant here, so how do I overwinter them till I can plant in early spring? I know with perennials to just put them in the garage and not let them totally dry out. Iβm not sure if evergreens go dormant, Iβm thinking they donβt. So, not sure exactly how to keep them. Thanks so much.
Hi Jim! I just purchased a few sky pencil Holly on clearance and noticed they all have 2-3 separate trunks in the pots. One of them Iβve separated into individual trunks and the other 2 I did not. Did I mess them up? Are they supposed to be multiple trunks? I was gonna separate the other couple I have but I didnβt want to mess up there aesthetics.
I always enjoy your videos. Sometimes I feel like I learn more than others, because of the complexity. Regardless, my property looks much better due to your information.
My question for the week is about grub worms. I had a large bed with ornamental sweet potatoes and pumpkin plants that did great. I started ripping them out and noticed a ton of grub worms. I ended up tilling the area and collecting all the worms for my chickens. I read and watched videos on how to deal with them, but Iβm not sure how to prevent them from returning.
Will broken down leaves mixed with compost on top of awful hard clay in my yard help the soil over the winter to be better for spring?
One difference between evergreens that does not seem to be stressed enough, is do they keep or do they drop the inner dead foliage. I removed my Fern Spray Hinoki Cypress because the inner parts kept turning brown but never falling off. It looked bad all year. Nearby is a Vanderwolf's Limber pine which while it too sheds inner needles they fall off the tree and the tree looks fine.
Running a hose down ant holes in Indiana does not make them leave the area! It does not work with voles or chipmunks either.
Ants by an evergreen could be carpenter ants that are tunneling in the plant.
I had ants all around the base and running up the trunk of a blue spruce. It had started having many inner brown needles. I sprayed repeatedly and the ants died and the tree stopped having copious amounts of inner dead.
Will you be attending MANTS in Baltimore in January again?
Very interesting point about how and where you water plants (away from plants). One learns something new every day!
Great Video Jim. I'm transitioning from using Peat with perlite, to Coco Coir with perlite, and then when I can make enough of it, leaf mold, and or compost with pine fines soil conditioner added to start seed in. For my potting mix I'll add alfalfa pellets, or worm castings to the seed mix as a fertilizer.. I know you've used diluted fish emulsion, as a liquid fertilizer alternative, for young seedlings and that has worked very well also for me. Thank you for the work that you do in putting these videos together!!!
Thanks for the great Q & A Jim!
Question: zone 7b. We bought a Rising Sun Red Bud 3 years ago. It was about 7 feet in a 7 gal container. Planted in full sun in May. It has struggled every year despite trying different things with water, fertilizer, etc. We moved it carefully last year so it would get a little shade, and it did the same thing. The leaves always look ragged and poor but it's still very much alive. What would you do at this point? We're considering taking a loss and tossing it.
Thanks for any advice.
How do we get rid of voles? Looks like me and my neighbor wonβt get out dahlias back next year.
Thank you for answering the question about distance between male/female plants!! I now feel confident I can put one in each of my shade gardens and still set berries ππΌ
I see the 'Join' button when using the Safari browser on my iMac and iPad, but it's not there on my iPhone. This means Youtube's responsive Web design is eliminating the 'Join' button to make the little screen less crowded and easier to read.
I do not use the Youtube app on any of my Apple devices.
Do you have any experience or opinion on Fine Line Buckthorn? Iβm in 7a western Arkansas. We get a lot of heat and humidity, but not necessarily a lot of rain. I always learn from every one of your videos, thanks.
I don't think you've covered Anna's Magic 8ball on your channels. Any reason why? It's been a great low ball with bright color for me.
Thank you again for a lot of useful information ππππ¦ππ
Good morning, in several videos you mentioned and have shown African Basil for attracting pollinators. There are several types of African Basil in online searches. I was wondering what type you have in the garden. I have not seen African Basil in local nurseries and am checking for where that can be obtained.
Our dogs pee on everything, especially trees in the yard. For ornamentals weβve had luck with saucer magnolias they handle all the pee, little watering and still bloom year after year. Norway maple also thrives tho be careful itβs invasive here. Our red maple planted at the same time hasnβt been doing as well with being peed on, same with any fruit trees. Zone 7a
Hi Jim! I have a question. When are you going to get some roses in your landscape? Today in zone 7A, most of mine are still covered in blooms and are providing most of the garden beauty in late fall/early winter. If you're worried about disease, there are some that are super resistant. Most of my Kordes roses don't get any blackspot until the very late fall (if at all), when the leaves are falling off anyway.
Hi! I have small dogs, so their pee hasn't really been an issue. But I would avoid planting yew. They are very toxic to dogs.
Thank you, Jim, for adding the "Join" link! π One question–does one still get to partake in the monthly Zoom meetings w/ the $1.99 membership?
