I was astounded to discover that there are people that have never tried boiled peanuts. I was even more astounded to discover that there are people who don’t like boiled peanuts after trying them!

Today we’ll be planting the best variety of peanuts for boiling — Valencia peanuts. I’ll tell you about my family history with boiled peanuts and why I just have to grow some!

We’ll also be hilling and side-dressing our sweet corn — better late than never right?! And we’ll be thinning our Glass Gem corn so that the stalks are thick and healthy.

  1. I LOVE boiled peanuts. Best ones are the big ones, Virginia Jumbo and African Jumbo. The very small ones irritate me.

  2. Peanuts. Let’s see you can eat them raw when I say raw I mean freshly picked of in vine when they are dug. Then you can boil them. Let dry in the shell then parch them. You can shell them shell then they can be fried. The best ones I have eating are Spanish variety. Some call them red skin. Travis your right boiled peanuts and high school football go together will corn, peas, fried okra, onion, tomatoes and corn bread. Do you have in your area a Hardy Farms boiled peanut stand?

  3. Southeast Ohio. Never had boiled peanuts but have heard of them and would like to try them next time I make it to the south

  4. I love boiled peanuts! Haven’t seem much here in my area, Utah County, Utah. They definitely bring back childhood memories. Thank you for the growing information. I think I’ll try growing some. Love your channel.🌺

  5. My dad was from Kansas and moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he married and started a family. Yes, boiled peanuts were a thing in Jacksonville of course, but not in Kansas.

Anyway, my grandfather was visiting from Kansas over the holidays one year and he and my dad and I went to the Gator Bowl game. Guys were hawking BOILED PEANUTS in the stands (with a thick southern accent).

My grandfather was puzzled and leaned over and asked my dad, "What in tarnation is a bald peanut? I've never seen a peanut with hair on it."

    Yes, I like boiled peanuts.

  6. I had never had boiled peanuts until I was stationed in SC in 1981 – 1982. They are really good! I miss good southern food and snacking on boiled peanuts in the evening. Could buy them everywhere down there. Use to order seafood boil at a restaurant outside of Charleston over the big bridge. They had really good food and boiled peanuts there too!

  7. I have never heard of, so I have never eaten boiled peanuts. I am in texas now, I have not seen anyone selling them. However, when I do should I ask them what type they are? What are boiled peanuts boiled in?

  8. Growing up in California, I had no idea what boiled peanuts even are. Then I had some in Arkansas. They tasted like beans. They were just ok. My friend from Florida made some for me in a slow cooker flavored with Old Bay seasoning. Fantastic!

  9. I was raised in deep south MS and my granny grew her own peanuts every year to boil, and I helped as much as a child could from as far back as I can remember. I remember the first batch of the season was pretty much dinner that night because the whole family would come over and granny would pour them out on to the table and we'd eat until we got a belly ache. It was more than a snack, it was a family tradition and some of my fondest memories.
As an adult I introduced my husband to boiled peanuts on our first drive down for him to meet my family. Sadly, granny was gone by that time so it was just a can from a roadside, but I got him hooked. Hopefully, I'll be able to grow enough this year to boil myself and start the tradition over in my family up here in Memphis. Strangely, I haven't ever seen them up here.

  10. Love boiled peanuts. Honestly some of the best I’ve had are in the yellow and green can!
I planted 4 rows of the Wynne peanut seed Tuesday. Is that a good boiling variety?

  11. I'm living in SW Ohio. Although my parents were from Kentucky, we never ate boiled peanuts. I can't remember the first time I tried them, but it must have been almost 50 years ago. Some of the local gas stations started selling them. I tried them and never looked back! I have developed my own recipe and cook them in a crock pot. I make more than I can eat, so I freeze them in small bags.
This is the first time I have visited your site, and I enjoyed it very much. I learned a lot listening to you. What really stood out was that you truly enjoyed what you were doing. You create an aura that make your readers feel as though we're all kindred spirits. Thank you!

  12. No boiled peanuts up here. Never tried them that I can remember but have heard of them when we traveled south. I think my fam tried some in a can when they were down south and did not really care for them. However, I figure it is like anything else and good homemade ones might be much better. Yes, I would definitely try them!

  13. Lol love it we would be great friends. I’m from south west GA. It blew my mine one day when I met someone who didn’t know what boiled peanuts where🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ how? Love your videos!!!

  14. Took a vacation in the south and saw all these signs advertising boiled peanuts. Never heard of such a thing. So I stopped at a gas station and tried it and I expected a real treat….nope, didn’t like it. I would try again.

  15. I pretty much live on boiled peanuts in the summer. I only eat the little Spanish (valencia) ones though. Those big fat ones just aren't fit to eat boiled.

  16. I have not been a fan of boiled peanuts, but I think it is an "expectation vs. reality " thing. I have a feeling they would be great in some Indian, South African type cuisine that has decent amount of spices, etc. Just treating it like a bean/legume.

  17. That's a big YES from us. My Dad was from south Ms. So of course we had them and couldn't wait till it was digging time.

  18. Very informative channel.

About this boiled peanut thing. I live in Texas and have never had, seen, nor been offered boiled peanuts at any time during my 70 years. It must be a locale-based cultural phenomenon. Around these parts we prefer roasted and salted in the shell. Which is odd since the process of salting a peanut in the shell is almost identical to the recipe for boiled peanuts. All they would have to do is turn the fire on under the peanuts while they soak in the salt water, except they don't. Somehow, around here, they are soaked, then roasted, and I've been hooked on the things since I had my first bag at a ballgame back in 1958.

I've never spent much time east of the Mississippi River where the boiled peanut rules, but I'll make sure I try them on your recommendation. Great videos. Keep up the good work.

  19. Didn’t think I would like boiled peanuts 🥜 but I tried them and love them. I’m in Georgia so maybe it is a Southern thing. Lol 😂

  20. I was born and raised in Florida and we love boiled peanuts. I can understand other parts of the country not knowing anything about them. I know a very nice lady from Chicago and she doesn’t like most of our southern foods

  21. I have never had boiled peanuts! When I was a child my mamaw grew valencia peanuts, but we roasted them. I haven't had those in years either. I did plant some this year so hopefully I will have a harvest. Maybe you guys can do a video showing how to prepare them.

  22. Yes, I love boiled peanuts. Born in Mississippi but transplanted to the Midwest where nobody sells boiled peanuts. Have to order them to be shipped here. It's a real bummer.

  23. I am from New Jersey, I like boil peanuts 🥜. Yes, I have southern roots and I can only get them when I travel down south or someone coming up and they will bring back for me. They are good when you get them from down South. 😏

  24. I like to eat all kinds of peanuts including boiled. I like them roasted and fried too.

  25. I bet the same people that don't like boiled peanuts, don't like Duke's mayonnaise either.
