I was ready for Dollar Tree this year, so I’m excited to share this Dollar Tree gardening and seed haul with you. I’ve got big gardening and plant goals for 2021!
Thanks for the video, you’re lucky to find a fully stocked DT. I have checked four of the DTs between my home and work and none of them have a full selection yet.
Best to purchase a big bag of potting mix at the home improvement stores. Will be way more cost effective. And for the flowers try snapdragon, they are beautiful.
I would definitely suggest Bacholors buttons (which you have), Nasturtiums, and poppies. These 3 flowers are my go-to because they are so easy to grow, reseed, thrives in poor soil (especially nasturtiums), and they attract beneficial pollinators. Also, nasturtiums are edible! I would definitely look into nasturtiums on the enternet, because they THRIVE on neglect. Give them fertilizer, and they don’t produce enough flowers. I love these 3 just because they reseed easily so you don’t have to keep buying them year after year
Oooh dye garden! Tell me more 😍 what are you dyeing? Lots of traditional dye plants are weedy (woad, goldenrod, pokeweed), processed from roots that take a while (madder, bloodroot), or are better for warmer climates (indigo). That being said, some good varieties that are easily found in a home garden are sunflowers, coreopsis, rudbeckia, marigolds, and yarrow. Lots of plants will yield yellow dye. Some give pink or purple but the color is usually not lightfast, so expect it to change over time. Blue was one of the most coveted colors and made with indigo (which can grow in US zone 8 and up) or woad. Overdyeing can expand the colors, dipping blue dyed materials into yellow makes green. It’s on my list to start a dyer’s garden but I hesitate due to my limited real estate. It takes a high ratio of dyestuff to fiber to make rich colors. In any case, experimenting is fun and always a worthwhile pursuit! Keep us posted 😊
the starter pots are great! I purchased some “dishwashing” bins from Dollar tree as well to bottom water. They hold 9 3 1/2 in pots. I’d get some worm compost and mycorrhiza to amp up your potting soil mix and give your seeds a good start. Also look into winter sowing in milk jugs to start lots of seeds inexpensively and with little sustained effort. The seed starting trays work great for the microgreens! The lids don’t fit great but they work. At first, I was the type of gardener that put one seed in each cell but now I’m seeding at a high density in the 3 1/2 in pots, growing out and then separating. You can look up seeding in flats for more info on this technique. The seed starter trays would be better if they had had any insert with drainage holes and the lid fit properly but hey, it was a dollar! Looking forward to seeing more videos 💗
I remember seeing so many butterflies, wild black eyed susans, queen anne's lace, and little purple flowers around me. Since the bee 🐝 drop I have been missing all these things. I am heading to dollar tree today. Maybe it will bring them back. Thanks for sharing. 💙🦋
Be careful cheap seed starting mix dollar tree. I ran out my good brand bought a bag it was not good & killed my seedlings last year. Had to be a chemical in it. Spend extra few bucks if you can
