  1. Well, there's an overwhelming majority that these should be removed now. That's what my gut was telling me. It will allow the ground to settle in a bit before spring and I can dream all winter and find the perfect specimens in early spring for replacement. Removal scheduled for Thursday! So quick, but might as well rip the bandaid off, right? 😬

  2. Cut them down now. You’ll have the winter to think about what to plant next year. Move on!!

  3. What a shame to lose such large and lovely trees. Arizona cypress is a fast grower and has beautiful color.

  4. Suggestions for replacement trees that are very easy to maintain and should do well in your area are 1) Alaskan Weeping Cedar, as they come in narrow to a bit wider varieties but are still a very upright tree or 2) one of a large variety Hinoki Cypress.
Thank you for the tours of your garden. You've done a lovely job.

  5. If you don't like them now, you might as well get rid of them as they will not get better. Have you considered getting the tree carved by an artist. If the trunk is too small, you could use it as climbing rose pillar and put a solar lantern on it. or maybe a nice bird house. These are some suggestions.

  6. Cull them, sit on it for winter. Partner with a local tree grower and purchase more mature evergreens that perform well in your area and in the space.

  7. 100% take them down now. You mentioned so many good reasons for doing it now like fall is the perfect time, you won’t damage other plants, and the arborist will already be there. In addition, you won’t have any risk of limbs or the trees themselves falling in a storm and causing major damage. The ultimate bonus is you’ll have all winter to plan and photoshop or sketch ideas. ✌️

  8. I would get them removed as soon as possible. It’s the inevitable. We had 57 arborvitae’s removed because they were dying from the inside out. It made me sick to remove all of them but there was nothing else we could do. It did give me a lot of extra planting space just as your will.

  9. Yes get rid of them!! You can dream all winter for something beautiful to plant next spring!!

  10. I had 4 large oak tress removed because the centers were rotting, once gone it was a shock at first planted bald cypress in their place. The best decision I ever made since I don't have to pick up acorns or dead branches anymore. Please remove them asap.

  11. It’s a tough call but one you have to make sooner than later, in the long run you’ll be happy you did

  12. Procrastination just makes the wait worse! You know they're coming out so taking them out now, allowing the ground to rest, and planning what you will replace them with will give you a season to plan. It is hard to take down such massive trees but they will not improve and it will be a task you won't have to look forward to later.

  13. Ooh that sucks especially the Blue Spruce, my favorite tree. I guess it is what it is, you deffinately dont want 2 huge eye sores if they are just gonna get worse. Well, this will change up your landscape up there a bit! Curious to see what you replace them with! Take care!

  14. I too lost a blue spruce to needlecast disease. I do love the blue they give but hard to keep disease free. Cut down now and maybe put something more disease free, as ground would possibly give another tree like this same disease. I'm still debating on what to plant in the vacant spot myself here. I'm sure you will pick something beautiful in its place. The ones you had have served their purpose. Anxious to see what you put.

  15. Yes, take them out now, as they will continue to deteriorate, and are indeed too close to the house. It s good to embrace change and accept this as an opportunity to plant something more suited to your environment.

  16. I think remove them. I’ve been told it’s a good idea to wait about 9-12 months to plant in and around the grounded stump area. Just wanted to share info. It will look fantastic whatever you decided!❤

  17. Were they not so close to the house, I would keep them. But the size alone makes me say take them out. A suggestion for a replacement, how about a tall thin evergreen. Think Italian Cypress.

  18. Hi, I think its wise to remove them now, and over the winter look around to see what would work in that area, Take care,

  19. Yes, listen to your arborist. I had one come out to my property when I first moved here for some help with bushes and tree. They were terrific with everything because unlike tree companies they’re not out to cut down your trees. They let me know that the Spruce next to my next deck was only a couple of years behind the halfway dead spruce in the bottom of the yard. They told me that it was worth cutting those down now but at a minimum I could try cutting the branches off the one next to my deck. when the tree at the bottom of the yard at the bottom of the yard finally died I called somebody to cut down the tree. My husband and them talked me into cut down both while they were here instead of waiting three years for the tree to follow.

Looking back I am so grateful all the opportunities it unlocked then waiting for a tree to finish dying. And put all your other plants at risk along with your house to drag it a messy end. I still struggle cutting down stuff it’s not the easiest thing for me but I move forward instead of cutting the branch to delay time. I’m sorry for the hard choose

  20. Suggestion-Carolina Sapphire Arizona Cypress. They provide that nice blue evergreen look and they grow super fast 3-5 feet per year.

  21. Hi there, Tamera here, Zone 7 here East TN.
I'm so sorry your Spruce's got sick, such a shame when trees die prematurely😥
I think I would go ahead and pull it this season while the sap is going down. It might be cheaper grinding the stump and like you said, it will give time for things to rot and die off.
I wish I could remember plant names as well as you!! 🤔 😉

  22. I have a blue spruce that looks really bad. Our neighbor planted a river birch on his property right next to the spruce and it receives too much shade. I hadn't considered it was diseased until after watching your video. I will be removing mine as well after Thanksgiving, so I can use the greens for Christmas. Luckily mine is a manageable size. No thoughts on what you should plant, just a thank you for sharing the information. Central Ohio

  23. So sorry. Rip the band-aid off. Find a good some good alternatives. Best time to plant trees is now. I like purple plums, but they can have issues as well. Forgot your zone, will tea olives grow there?

  24. Probably a good idea to remove now. It will give you time to think through a new vision for the areas. Sad to see large trees decline.

  25. Hi Matthew! I somehow missed this video and see that you decided to remove the trees. I hadn't realized how bad they looked inside, so you definitely made the right decision. I'm looking forward to seeing what you replace them with. Now on to the video talking about the removal. Thank you so much for sharing!
