Things are looking up in the grow room and due to the currant situation I have made some changes to my garden plans for this summer.

  1. I am just going to grow less items this year. potatoes and onions mostly. Colomba and Marabel potatoes which are already chitting and Sturton onion sets. I also have some Cole tomato seedlings as well as Halvor's Yellow both of which I got from Southpaw Davey.

  2. I live in the US. In the state of Virginia. I live in a rural area in the SW part of the state. I am sad to say people are not listening. I work at a home improvement store and our foot traffic is pretty much the same as before the warnings and orders. Love your videos!!! Stay safe and healthy.

  3. I have a veggie garden going, which hasn't bloomed yet but when it does, which fertilizer do you recommend?

  4. Thanks for the video Dale. I hope you and Angel are doing good. I look forward to seeing what happens with your garden and hopefully you can get the promix.

  5. I started my tomato seeds on the 31st. I am happy to see this; because now I know I’m not too late.
I had originally planned to buy seedlings, but decided I had better try my own.
I am getting some celeriac seeds sent to me. I tried Johnny’s in Maine via your link, but they are closed due to the quarantine. Have you ever grown celeriac?

  6. Off to a good start in your grow room, Dale. I like the cube. Looks like the answer for your brassicas.

  7. Glad to see the spruce and strawberries made it. The garden centers here have now started to take orders on line and are delivering I also saw they are doing similar in the UK so they dont have to compost all the starts. I would try and find out if they can do that there. It makes sense that people grow more at home in the situation.

    Stay safe Dave

  8. As usual I waited to long to get some flowers for the porch and yard now can't go out and buy any. You plants are looking wonderful!
I have a privacy tent like you little green garden screen. Yes I can only get it flat no way can I ever get it into it's little round bag. LOL

  9. Dale have you ever heard of perennial
onions, shallots, leeks potato onions? You just plant them one time and they have babies! So I’m not sure when the babies happen? Because I just planted mine. But once a year each Bob has 10 to 12 babies and then you transplant them and they each have 10 to 12 babies every year. So what you’re gonna eat is your older stock that had the babies. They are just single bulb individual items unlike a walking onion that is just huge and takes up so much space. I bought two different types of shallots one big bulbous one which is yellow outside so I’m assuming that you’re just normal one? And then the smaller French ones are called grey-griselle-shallot. Things are looking great in your grow room!

I have small plants to plant after April 15. That’s the old-timers planting date down here in the bottom of South Carolina. I learned my lesson of planting before that date! I got behind as I told you. So I’m just going to plant the tiny plants straight into the garden. Actually it they will grow almost as fast. I won’t have that potting up transition time for the plants.

  10. You have a seriously green thumb, Dale. Everything is starting to look so healthy and vigorous already. I could eat my weight in onions, as well as garlic. Blessings xx

  11. GOOD MORNING DALE AND ANGEL 😊 LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR GARDENS 😃THE POP UP SCREEN I USE FOR MY CATS MOE AND MIA LOL TAKE CARE AND TALK LATER 💓 👍 GOD BLESS YOU 💖

  12. Good morning Dale. I was waiting for you to say you couldn't collapse the pop-up screen enough to get it through the door to get it outside. That would have tragic but then very funny too. 🤣🤣 Stay safe up there. Best wishes Bob.

  13. A LOT of Aussies are starting to grow their own now. That's a good idea! LOL. There's even a shortage of live chickens. Ques at groceries and garden/hardware stores are long to make sure only a few people enter at once. I've gone back to using seeds as well mate. It's autumn (well, kinda.. nearly.. should be) so I have cabbage seedlings sprouting. I like the idea of your cube (yes, I worded that carefully. LOL. You can tell I worry about the practicality.) Thanks for the share mate.

  14. Hello Dale. Good to hear from you today. I too am not planting a lot this season. I have centered on just the basics: potato, leafy greens  (I am a forager and always pick a bunch of dock, dandelion and clover flowers for supper, no matter what comes out of the garden), beans, summer crookneck, mayhap some cabbage (the seedsman I do business with sent me excellent cabbage seed packaged as Sage, which is what I wanted to plant last season). Your spruce is looking chipper. I thought that cone you showed looked strangely non-pine. By the way, those trees drop cones that are still unopened and are like tubular hazards. You can step on them and slip and break an ankle. I know from experience. Didn`t break anything but almost took a header that day I I was hiking.

  15. it all is looking good! Have never planted onions from seed. My grandfather used to though my father used onion sets as I have always done. Must try that sometime. My garden boxes have become visible, the snow is receding in the yard, must be spring! Keep well!

  16. enjoyed it Dale , , , yep , , gonna be different this year , , we get most of our plants from Lowe's , had real good luck last year with our tomatoes , didn't save any seeds though , ooops .. . sure hope they're still open come May. .

  17. Thanks Dale for the update. For us, we are growing more this year . We already grow each year enough to provide for most of our veggies, storing root vegetables in the root cellar. This year I believe will be a difficult year for growing weather wise. We are going into a solar minimum, food, globally will be in short supply due to weather conditions for growing and harvesting (as it was last year also). An interesting channel to watch, if you have time, is Called the "Ice age farmer". Sometimes a little dramatic, but he has good info on the food situation. Take care! Howie.

  18. Good luck on getting seeds and starter plants , we have had difficulty getting items as most seed companies are overwhelmed with orders this year. We had to change items at feeds and needs  on rothesay ave ,as they are a veseys outlet and found some items sold out, some were for commercial customers only, and not certain if we can get our sturon onion sets and seed potatoes . Good luck and let us know when you get them, maybe a short video,,,,

  19. Those spruce seeds germinated quickly. With that pop up netting try this: once it is flat, bring two opposite corners together and slightly twist them in opposite directions while overlapping them. The other two other corners should come up with that action and overlap below the two you are holding. Don’t force it, just let them curve their way into a pile of the four corners in a circular shape. When I worked in childcare we had many pop up toys like that. They will go back with practice, just don’t force it or you’ll bend the wires which makes the process much more difficult.

  20. Dale I certainly understand. I sewed clothes for many years. Once the pattern was removed from the envelope, it never went back in as flat as it came. I even tried ironing it to see if that would help and it didn’t. There’s just some things that once they’re open they’re not going back in. Lol

  21. I have tilled the full garden this year for the first time in several years. All things considered it just seems like a good idea. I do plan on using up some outdated seeds in the ole seed box. So far the germination is surprisingly good.

  22. I had to laugh when you spoke of your pop-up as I had a similar experience with a mesh butterfly cage. When it arrived, the package was so small I thought they had sent me the wrong one. Big surprise as I stood a little too close when I opened it! Could only store it flat at half fold. Your seedlings look great. I'm excited for your strawberries as none of mine have germinated after 25 days.

  23. Thank you for the video. I am planting tomato seeds in the morning, I meant to do them a week ago. No excuses, I have plenty time on my hands. Stay well, Dale.

  24. Hi Dale! I trust you are staying safe from the virus there on your island. God bless.

  25. Hi Dale, I was wondering if you notice an increase in your electric bill when using the heat mats? I have used a heating pad in the past and it really did increase my bill.

  26. Good update Dale. I have a pop up lighting tent with the same issue, I got it out but can't get it back into its bag 😉

I think things from garden centers and soil providers will not likely materialize or be hampered somehow this year with the restrictions. I know from ordering seeds, quite a few of the places I buy from have either run out of seeds or have stopped taking orders for a bit due to the overwhelming demand of seed orders.
    Take care and stay safe

    Cheers
    Harold

  27. Greetings from PEI Dale. I have been growing onions from seed for about ten years now. I trim mine occasionally to keep them healthy. Not sure if anyone else has made the comment. They trimming forces the energy in to the root and bulb.

  28. Thank you. Please recommend a specific potato, to grow in 5 gallon pails. (Although I doubt that I can find the ships / seeds.) None of my neighbors are laughing at me anymore – guess the Victory Gardens are back! Had great success with sweet potatoes. Want to try "regular" potatoes. Thanks. Happy Easter.

  29. That pop up deal is cool. gave me an idea to make one for the tomatoes in my 5 gallon pails. The mockingbirds peck every red tomato, every one. Not upset if they take a few, but, jeez louise, every single one?. I grew some Cherokee Purples last year. Had to put a gun to the wife's head to try, as they look weird, and you cannot let them get "ripe", like regular tomatoes. I created a monster, now all I hear is, How are the Cherokees coming? – For me, they are super difficult, but worth the effort. Best tasting tomato I ever ate – not even close. Wish you well. You have provided many hours of enjoyment, so I thank you for that. In America, during WW2, they were called Victory Gardens. I have no doubt that our Canadian brothers and sisters did the same.

  30. I planted my garden in boxes. My sister does too. They do great. And I grow tomatoes, sweet belle peppers hot peppers, cucumbers radish lettuce onions garlic and just whatever mostly you can grow in the garden . Also some very diff cucumbers. I’ll see what they look like as soon as they make themselves . Just cardboard boxes. For the ppl who live in the concrete jungle as my grandson calls it. So maby some ppl can try that.
