We planted turmeric in our raised bed garden last year and had a phenomenal harvest considering we really didn’t know what we were doing. We’ve ground some of the turmeric to use as a seasoning and in smoothies, but we still have plenty to replant in the backyard garden.

This time we’re going to try growing it in the in-ground garden. In order to do that, we need to pick a shaded spot alongside the tree line. Join us as we show you how we plan on growing our turmeric this year. We’ll also be planting some horseradish and pruning our Brussels sprouts for the last time.

  1. Self sufficient me on YouTube has a video about turmeric with 1.8m views. Might be a good source. Didn’t watch it

  2. The turmeric would probably be a great seller in the vegetable stand that Abram has occasionally. It and ginger are very popular right now. I feel you guys with the Brussels sprouts. I struggle with broccoli, cauliflower also. You always talk about how easy field peas are to grow but I always get aphids. I’ve tried spraying them so many times. The aphids laugh at me and I end up just having to pull them up. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

  3. I might try Brussel sprouts in the fall they are looking good, BTW its gonna get high 70's this week and next week in the 80's spring is here for SouthGA.

  4. Hey Travis. As always, great video on some interesting topics. Lots of exciting things going on at LDF!! Thanks for sharing with us!!

  5. I'm going to ask you a different question. Lettuce iceberg lettuce how easy is it to grow? I don't remember if I've ever seen you have any growing I've grown the leafed lettuce but not a head type. Any help is appreciated I started 2 types in the green house the other night.

  6. Turmeric flowers are beautiful! I eat the rhizomes instead of taking Tylenol. It works for headaches and back pain for me.

  7. MI gardener grew some a while back. Getting it out of the ground almost kicked his butt!! I just saw some in a seed catalog but, after you saying “slivers” make me wonder what I would get. You really do have one of the best channels. We get to see the good, the bad & the ugly. You’re not scared to say “ I don’t know” I, personally, admire that! Thank you to you and your beautiful family.

  8. Well, I’m not the only one! Brooklynn’s out in the wind in a big puffer jacket, in shorts. Been there, done that, many times!

  9. I’m so glad you did this video! I’m fixing to throw some turmeric into a big container ! I’m praying I have your same size of harvest! 🤞🏻

  10. Just trimmed all my Brussels back to the Head hoping that it will push more of the water and nutrients to the Brussels instead of making leaves. We cooked up the leaves just like we would a collar and oh my God they were awesome! My Brussels are still pretty small but hopefully this will help them develop.

  11. Hey Travis always great content. I've not gotten into growing my own turmeric or horseradish yet. Maybe I'll try some this fall? That kitchen knife is like a little machete now. It made really quick work of those brussel sprouts! So proud to see yours are doing better this time around. I have about 16 broccoli starts in my seed starting trays. Now I guess I need to step them up. Can you not eat the brussel sprouts leaves? Those sure were pretty! I'm going to try to catch me some rabbits for fertilizer. Free fertilizer all the way around. I have nearly a whole 72 seed tray full of tomatoes. I wish I could put one of those time lapse cameras on them to watch them grow. Man they come up fast. Very interested in the turmeric that Brooklyn is using for her shakes. It was cold for about 2 weeks now its warming up again, but alot of wind. Feels like perfect camping weather. Are you going to plant sunflowers in your garden or on your property? I've got several varieties but not sure which spots I want to plant them in yet. I kind of wanted to mix and them some I want only 1 variety in a single spot. Then again I guess I can always bookend them. Sorry my adhd has my head spinning!

  12. You should sell some of your extra turmeric roots you grow , I would buy from you guys you should try growing some ginger it grows about the same way . Tks for sharing

  13. To push the sprout growth, you need to cut out the tops. These are also good to stream and eat with a little butter and salt

  14. Woooooow my friend LAZY DOG FARM, these are the kind of original videos I like, really please don't stop gardening, I see you will have a very good harvest of TURMERIC, plus your videos are very motivating, keep it up, go go go gooooo!!! happy gardeniiiiing

  15. Hi Travis, to get tumeric to bloom, you'll need to save some finger roots to mature 2-3 yrs depending on your growing zone..they'll become the "mother root". Plant them, and fertilize them, water as needed, your site for the ones by the pines will work well..run and irrigation line for water or mulch well with straw of choice or older leaves. The finger roots you planted are the harvest, the mother roots are the producers. Honey Tree Farm utube channel relly explains well and has a good video on it too

  16. I planted my potatoes 2-16 and I was thinking about planting green beans next week I'm in zone 8 b 100 miles east of you what do you think? Another good show

  17. My dad gave me some horseradish years ago and I didn't have a spot for it. So, silly me, stuck it in the garden to transplant later.
It is still in my garden. I have dug it up and it returns.
Any little root that is left behind and when you till every little piece will grow.
I'm hoping this year 🙏 I have it controlled.

  18. – watch Mi gardener's video about horseradish, he says its a permanent thing where you put it –
I keep my Tumeric in a wire basket for aeration until time to plant, now and then I spray them down with some water so they don't dry out, worked good for me so far-
I got myself this year a tiny cupcake silicon tray, I peeled the turmeric I was going to eat and ground it in the food processor and froze it into tiny "muffins" to use as "a dose"
Now I'm using these each day to make a health elixir here's the recipe from "motivationaldoc's" channel- :
dash of black pepper and cayenne pepper, juice of one half lemon, tumeric dose, one apple, one clove garlic, drizzle of olive oil, one cup water, blend

  19. Hey Travis, this is off topic but you should grow some dahlia flowers. Some of the largest flower blooms I've ever grown. The wife loves them too because they make such a great bouquet and awesome cut flowers. They last a while after being cut too. Happy Garden to you sir, thanks for the videos.

  20. Came for the video stayed for the mustache. Hey trav!! Our favorite supper club we go to wants me to supply their produce during the growing season!!! I'm stoked!

  21. It grew wild back home in Ohio. Never even had to plant none. Lol I can though advise ya to make sure you got LOTS of ventilation when you process it! It will set your eyeballs aflame!! 🤣🤣 If you'd like to try some a little less “spicey,” when you do process it, grind ya up some red beets and add to it. Makes it purdy, cools it a little, and makes it somewhat sweeter. Not sugar sweet but “beet sweet.”
I am most looking forward to hearing your boys tell us it's “tader time!” LOL Watched your video yesterday and for the rest of the day, I heard their little voices in my head saying “its tader time” HAHAHAHA 🤣 Thanks for sharing and all you do. God Bless you all ~Lisa

  22. At first I thought you had acquired oca to plant along with your taters. I was hopeful for my first attempt at oca last year, but I never got tubers. I was hoping you would show me what I did wrong. 🙄

  23. True Georgia people wear a jacket and shorts at the same time 😂😂. The other states just don't get it.

  24. I've planted horseradish 3 times. Twice in GA and once in AL. All 3 times it grew for a little while and then died and never came back. That's about my luck with rhubarb and thyme too, in both states. And I've almost killed my comfrey off. I keep trying but I don't understand how those plants have invaded and multiplied for everyone. Lol?

  25. Travis can you see if this is what is happening to my comments and if this is why they are getting deleted.
So most likely your comments are ending up in the uploader's "likely spam" bucket or "held for review" bucket in their "comments" tab in YouTube Studio. Unfortunately, many people don't tend to admin their comments tab and likely spam buckets.

  26. Travis get a cheep coffee bean grinder to get the turmeric into a smooth fine powder. I use mine on my dehydrated kale, beats, carrots tops and anything else I can then and mix it and hide in foods and smoothies.
I also got a pill stuffer and pack my own pills with my dehydrated veggies I can't get my kids to eat. They will take the pills. You can make your own Turmeric pills.

  27. On that horseradish every one of them knobs on top could have been cut off to grow a new plant wouldnt hurt it a bit and just a 1 to 1.5 inch of it would be good then use the rest in the house… Good move with the fire ring though, you bout cant kill it when it gets away. LOL Love the stuff!

  28. Also dont just throw any trimmings around with that horseradish any little peice will sprout, found some 150 foot away… bird hauled it off maybe?

  29. I was just gifted some white, orange, and black tumeric from another channel and had no idea what to do with it. Then this video popped up in the knick of time.

  30. I've tried to grow Brussel sprouts for 3 years. But got not a single one to grow worth a darn. I give up. I guess I'll always have to buy them

  31. Can you please advise how many turmeric rhizomes you planted to get the amount you harvested in the raised bed?

  32. When I was in my last house, zone 9, I was successful with Brussel sprouts. What I did was pick them off the stem as we wanted to eat them. They were about half the size of those big grocery store ones, but 5 plants had us enough for supper on the nights we wanted them. Those plants were crazy long by the time I was forced to pull them up because the tomatoes had grown so big and needed the room. This year, in our new homestead, I have some in raised beds and they look just like yours. I may try that trick I learned at our old house to see if they keep going. Also, all those leaves you cut off are delicious cooked just like mustard greens. Little chopped seasoning, brown your smoked sausage, add the greens and water. Cook down and season with a few spices. Yummy.

  33. Loving the videos. Just was wondering what kind of rototiller your using. Couldn't find it on your website. Thank you.
