In 2021 we changed our backyard gardening techniques and strategies in an attempt to feed our soils more instead of just feeding the plants. As a part of this program, we started using more organic fertilizers that feed the soil biology and help make the plants more resilient to insect and disease pressure.
Join us as we harvest our first organic cabbage from our backyard garden and assess how well they performed being grown this way. We’ll also provide an update on our spring seed starting with tomatoes and peppers, and we’ll be planting some celery transplants that we’ve had in the greenhouse for a while.

What did you seal the fig stobs with ?
My celery (zone 6b/7a) I rooted them from cut end scraps grew just fine but the stalks were a bit to skinny.
I planted celery for the first time this last Fall. It made it through some pretty low temps. Not in the 20s but down to low 30s. I also discovered the two varieties I have are self blanching so I didn't need to hill them up. Celery is one of those vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, etc. that tastes completely different to what you get in the store. So fresh eating from now on, I will probably only ever grow it myself or buy it from local Farmer's Markets.
That was a well rounded video of what is going on at LDF!! Greenhouse to garden to compost bins, there was something for everyone. 3 days to germinate tomatoes, especially the heirlooms, is fantastic. You must have your greenhouse set up just right. Compost bins look like they are working well and you are going to have some great soil amendments come Spring. Looking forward to Monday’s vid – keep up the great work!
Fantastic cabbage results….I sure your celery will do just as well.
Speaking of bug pressure, last year, cut worms were my worst nightmare. None of the channels I follow have mentioned them. Do you have efficient recommendations to reduce thier impact on my garden?
I grew celery for the first time last year here in Oregon, zone 8B, and did everything wrong, but it still thrived. I started it sown thick in 4" pots hoping to plant it young while easy to separate seedlings. That didn't happen so they got bound and tangled but I managed to get them apart and in the ground way late. They made it through a 116 degree heat wave and lived. I left a few in the ground after pulling things out in November and they have survived 14" of snow at Christmas and now in late January a week of freezing temps down to 23. I did not hill any of them since I had read that the nutrient level will be higher although they may be a bit bitter. I'm OK with that. They do like lots of water.
Where do u get the fertilizer pellets u put down at planting?
What shredder did u find that shreds cardboard?
Freaking out in southwest Florida. Hoping I don't lose it all. We are in for the coldest temperatures in 7 years
Damn. The tomatoes are huge
.
Celery- patience. If you like celery it's worth it. I'm so excited about all those fig cuttings! They look great. You've inspired me to do the same thing. I'm going to let it warm up a little more. I'm in 7a. Love the channel!
Hey
I planted celery last year and you can check out my video #5. I’m a novice at it, also, and am going to plant it again this year, starting a little earlier. I did, however, end up with a little harvest that I have been adding to my soups this fall/winter. The variety is Utah celery which should do great here because that’s where I live! 😊 I hope you get a great celery harvest. Your cabbages look amazing.
8 degrees here today. blizzard outside. love watching your videos 😊
Celery is quite cold hardy….It can even take some frost. They will do just fine, even the ones you thinned, go ahead and plant them too if they have roots on them. Unless they are self blanching, once they get about 10 inches high, wrap some newspapers or cardboard around the stalks to hold them tight together and to (shade) blanch them to keep them tender, the entire stalks, all the way up to where the leaves branch out…tie together with any kind of twine, and remove before harvesting. They need to be watered regularly. FYI…I'm in zone 4b, borderline 3.
I can't tell you how many brand new Fresh Eggs I've planted and NOT a ONE has come up as a Chicken !! 😁
Hi there Travis. Today I came upon a YouTube video on CELERY. Just was posted Jan 29, 2022. from Scott Head.
He also calls his channel "Black Gumbo Southern Gardening" says he is zone 9a southern gardening.
Thanks for all you do Travis. Chuck in Florida.
Thank you so much for all of the different discounts from so many different merchandise and people in your description area for all of your fam!
If you had time to make extra saurkraut, Abram could sell that too. I think that is what keeps me from raising cabbage and lettuces because we may not could eat it or freeze it fast enough. I'm looking into getting that stuff you had for the potatoes you showed. im going to try to get that plot tilled up real quick so it will be ready for planting. I'm waiting fir my seeds from MI Gardner to come in. And 1 last tomato variety. That gives me 6 varieties! And I haven't even chosen my snacking tomatoes yet. I'm finally getting out of the winter funk I was in and getting excited for growing again. Thanks for this series it's really helping get my ducks in a row. Now I just gotta get some rabbits for fertilizer.!
Oh the fig tree farm is looking awesome! I wonder if I need to wrap mine though because I don't think we are done with winter just yet. Last year the week of valentines we had a winter storm.
Very nice video with great info as always. I didn't notice that you had planted the Big Zac Tomatoes. Are they started yet?
Really like watching your videos to see what all I don't know about gardening. I have a question about onions. I live in NW North Carolina and they say up here don't put anything out until after Mothers day due to frost. I set my stuff out last year the Monday after Mothers day and had several things get killed by a frost about three days later. My question on onions is how soon can I set them out, will a frost kill them? Thanks
So excited about the Celery! I want to plant some myself, and I think no, I know I am now 😆 . I get what you said about watching other people gardening in other zones, that is one of the reasons we watch you. We are only about an hour and half away from you in Eastman, so same zone. Love the cabbages. Fermented Homestead is doing a collaboration "Fermenting February " that might give you some good ideas to use that cabbage.
What kind of shredder eats boxes?
Travis this is off topic but have you ever used corn gluten meal as a natural pre-emergent herbicide? My feed store talks about it and has done classes on it. I was wondering if you knew anything about it?
"As long as you learn something, it's not a complete failure." 👍
Celery in Maryland first time zone 7. I started with plants in cool weather and by summer it was in part shad. Had plenty even tho the rabbits loved it too. (Cool Weather)
Great haul on the cabbage. Good luck to your son selling at the roadside stand. Wish I lived near to partake of quality produce.
I feel the celery will do okay. You may have to protect it from frost, as you mentioned.
Peace on your doorstep!
Respectably. What if there was no power.
I've got a question. What do u know about smoking and touching plants. I've got a buddy that said his dad told him if u smoke or just out a chew in that it is bad to touch the transplants and pick veggies. I've not noticed it but maybe be I've not compared it to someone who doesn't us tobacco
Cabbage looks alot like a particular thin skin we males have in a certain spot when it wraps real tight hahahahah
Have you tried planting dill, or onions or garlic on rows along your cabbage? These plants detur pests. The smell throws them off.
I'm seeing yummy saurkraut with those beautiful cabbage.
