Obedient plant? It depends! This is Physostegia virginiana, a member of the mint family known as false dragonhead, obedient plant, or simply, obedience. The last two names derive from the fact that individual blossoms, when pushed one way or the other, tend to stay where they are pushed.
Given the conditions this plant prefers, moist soil and good sun, it runs in a manner that is anything but obedient. This accession was collected in Cheshire County, New Hampshire in 1984. It is in bloom now in the Eastern North American Area. I grew up with this plant in my family garden in suburban Boston, and I always enjoy seeing it in the collection. – Chris C
