  1. Kaye, how did you start your citrus trees, like the lime? I live in AZ so could probably have it out year round, but I have not seen a place that sells like small lime plants for starters? Yes, the free food pantries, every town/city has them I believe. I worked at one for a year, once a week volunteered. Everyone is so nice and helpful. They even had organic options! I was surprised. They had a wide variety of things including refridgerated items like milk and cheese and things and vegetables and fruit and breads, etc. Everyone should definitely check them out. If we do get into a real long food shortage I wonder if they will be able to stay stocked? But like the one I worked at got fresh things like greens and more frequently but also a section in back where they stored canned and packaged goods. Sometimes you had to ask for a certain item like milk or eggs that they keep refridgerated but have too. High is still 90 here in AZ where I am!

  2. Here in Western NC, I’m doing the same thing you are, making preparations to over winter certain plants. I have a greenhouse with water and electric; but, no insulation. Going to try to insulate and add a heater. I hope your cardamom plants do well.

  3. Ah yes! They will strip all the leaves quickly! Get it off and smash it. We got a heavy duty hand truck and move them in and out of the garage depending on the weather. What a pain! But we had lots of key limes and Meyer lemons. We have grow lights in the garage. I’m sure the neighbors think we are growing something else when they see the purple glow. 😂

  4. ‘Poop’ erpillar! Darrell is a hoot! So
glad you have Randy to help spread that hay! You’ll get it done, you are amazing! Food pantries are such a blessing for those that could use a little extra. So thoughtful of you to reach out. Absolutely, no shame!
    God Bless! 💗

  5. Please consider sharing your life with someone that can inhase your life! You are (like me) closer to the finish line than the starting line… It is too late for me, as no female would consider me as a catch even though I am a very successful business man. Anyway, I hope you find love and happiness…

  6. Good to see you, I have beautiful Jade beans coming in that I planted for a fall crop. I also planted some 43 day cucumbers, and carrots and green peas that can take a little frost, Still getting Okra and even a few tomato's, Did a big pot of soup. We ate half and then I fill single serving cups with the rest and put in the freezer. I am in North GA near Chattanooga. I hope our first frost holds up for another month. But we will see. Hope everyone is busy prepping. Things seem to be accelerating.

  7. 💙 Nice of you to let people know about the food pantry. Most people don’t say that stuff. I’ve never even heard of that till now.

  8. Papilo cresphontes, commonly called, 'the Bird Poop Caterpillar'. It's the larva of the Giant Swallowtail. It can have a wingspan of 4 to 6 inches and is mostly black with yellow bands and some red and blue markings. Bless you Kaye for speaking about food pantries. The need is so great right now with grocery and fuel costs so high. Our community food bank has already started its push for filling the shelves for Thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving, I just harvested my cranberries and lingonberries!

  9. Kaye I sure hope you asked whom ever you bought the straw from (hope you didn't get hay) but did you ask them if it was sprayed with grayzon? Is it organic? Your kitties are so beautiful. Are they all sisters and brothers?

  10. I'm not quite ready to finish up my garden just yet but the plants know what time it is more than I do. Your kitties look all grown up now. I hope they have turned into good mousers. ALL prayers welcome for my hometown, Tampa Bay. I grew up there and have family there. I told them to evacuate to my house here in NC. They bunker in and sit it out the best they can.

  11. I wish you well getting things into your warmer places. Yes, I think your area of the world will be cooler than usual for autumn and winter this time around. My caterpillars on the grapes got eaten by birds (hooray) but I still have the unwanted grasshoppers (sprayed hot pepper/mint/garlic spray but it slowed them but I think they are hardy). We are weeding still and mowing so that will help. Watch out for bad caterpillars that sting as some do. The grape skeletonizer caterpillars do. Prayers for Florida! We had orange Passion Fruits in the backyard when I was a kid in L.A. long ago.

  12. Kaye, Something people can do for food collection or groceries is work at the farmers market. I found there were several people with businesses that sell jam or flowers or preserved garlic need helpers. I saw someone I have bought from for years upset one day…she was working a busy Sat market and her helpers did not show. I help her now when needed…she pays me and gives me produce. It is a win-win. I was not planning on doing this because I have a job and work sometimes on the weekends proctoring tests, but I love it!

  13. I have never seen a insect like the Swallowtail leaf eater you showed us. Very strange indeed. Growing citrus has to be fun. I have wanted to try but never have.

  14. I was listening to you as I was on my way to the church. We have 2 churches that give food from North Texas food bank one does 1 and 3 Tuesdays, other 2 and 4. If 5, no food. I do go and get for my son who works till 8pm. This is from 6 to 7. And I was getting for my granddaughter, but she turned her nose up at it!! I still get and can what I'm able to can. I share veggies with my neighbor and share the canned goods and pasta at the little pantry behind the Presbyterian church. So we get a box of shelf stable, about 15 cans of veggies and tuna, 2 pkgs of spagetti and 2 of rigatoni. We also get a box of produce. I got some Brussels sprouts, never cooked so put on stove in frying pan with butter?? 2 ears of corn. I used the corn silk to make a tincture with vodka, can't remember what for. Cooked the corn and will boil the cobs for jelly!! I know my kids can't afford to put back so I buy and get from the church. This way I know they will have. I do volunteer at our local soup kitchen and now at the community garden!! I don't feel bad about getting food to help my children and others. I believe out tax money also helps fund these programs too. This administration is giving our tax money to everyone else , so if we can get help, we should!! Thank you so much for addressing this on your video. You are absolutely right, we all need to get help while we can. Later there'll be no help. Give mom a hug for me when you see her please. Keep up the good work. God bless!!🥰🙏💖

  15. This is a well done video and I thank you for breaking it down!! Despite the economic recession, I'm so happy 😊I have been earning $60,000 returns from my $8,000 investment on short period I can't wait to retire soon

  16. Yes food pantries are options where there are food pantries. Unfortunately I have seen food pantries close.
Where you live in the Midwest are being promised a very bitter cold winter. Those of us who live on incomes that are not going to increase are going to have to make some hard decisions. Also those of us who have very limited diets are going to have to make some hard decisions as well. Food pantries that have the ability to provide fresh produce are really important right now. Green leafy vegetables potatoes carrots sweet potatoes and herbs that can be used as teas medicinal teas maybe life-sustaining this winter

  17. Also okay there is 211. Just get on your phone and dial 211 in many places around the country 211 provides social service information. If there are any viewers or followers of your channel that live in the state of Missouri or live in the West excuse me South West part of Illinois the United Way of greater St Louis operates a 211 information and referral service there's also some United ways I think may have their services online as well.

  18. Great information love the vlog
One more thing I'm glad that you said everybody should do it not only because I'm sure that there are food pantries that we'll need volunteers. But let's face it unless your annual income is in the millions you never know when something in life can change unexpectedly. And even the billionaires got affected by the pandemic.

  19. I know. Its hard when there are only two hands on the farm. I hire occasional help, only because I took a much smaller bite to garden than you did. I'm proud of you and what you've accomplished! Two questions about the monster hay bail… 1. How much did the farmer charge and 2. What are you going to cover the hay bail with to protect it from the hurricane rains that will be moving north east after its done with FL?

  20. I haven't been on YouTube lately, so I missed a lot. Had to get a job because we are barely getting by on my hubby's income. Thanks for mentioning Food pantries! That is a great idea for people who can't afford to stock up. You are so kind to always think of others!! There is still hope if there are more people like us!! 😘

  21. Watch Appalachia’s Homestead. She’s been telling us the nature signs of an early, cold winter for weeks now.

  22. I am sure you know about the care to take when buying hay but just in case, it is essential to purchase from a farmer who does not use any nasty chemicals on his land. I have heard of gardeners losing their crop due to hay that was sprayed.

I grew a passion fruit vine from a seed that I dried from a purchased fruit. It has taken a year to grow over 15 feet high/long. I can't wait for it to produce fruit.

  23. My Persian Lime has given me limes before, and hoping for more this year. Have to bring it inside soon. Right now it is in my greenhouse which is unheated. I have other plants that need to come in soon as well. Getting down in the upper 30's low 40's here as well. I live in a pocket of climate 6b zone in upstate NY. It is raining every single day and my plants are getting soggy. Hope to get a few lima beans off my plants before they all die. The greens are doing well so will get some of that if the rain lets me between showers. Been here 40 years, the rainiest fall I think we have had. We often have rainy springs but not falls like this. Oh well, have to deal with what is, right.
KAYE, I really understand the struggle to find a place for all the plants that need to come inside. Still haven't got my greenhouse heated either. I grabbed it when it was on sale for only $1000 one year. It is 8' x 12' double walled and nice just not heated. I think it goes for over $2000 now. It stays about 10 degrees warmer than outdoor temperatures which gives me a little breathing room before everything needs to come in.

  24. So beautiful, i have one young plant in the grown , passion fruit. And they can't get wild! But such a delicious fruit tho .
I also live from paycheck to paycheck but i have learned to buy extra of what's on sale and learned how to waterbath canning that's one extra plus sinces i can't afford a pressure cooker.
Takes determination and lot's of work and sacrifice. I go to drif
store's for my jars etc .
Nothing more then wisdom how to stay at front what might happen.
Thank you for what you do . God bless!

  25. I have never seen a Giant Swallowtail in Tennessee, so that is quite a find. Great limes there. I have a lemon tree I started from seed over 4 years ago, but yet to get any blooms or fruit on it.

  26. Food pantry is a good idea. Also just adding one extra can of this or that and storing it away for long term storage is a way to go if those on a tight budget can do it.
