Plant observations – look closely at this broken branch of a ficus elastica. The outer section detected that it is no longer receiving water/nutrients so the branch begins to produce roots. The inner section detected that it no longer has a growing tip so it starts a new shoot. The key is this: the plant tissue responsible for both root and shoot production must be present for this to happen. That’s why you can’t start a new plant from cut flowers or leaves (like monstera leaves)
