Guilford County, N.C. — Thousands of people in Pleasant Garden were left without power over the weekend after a storm on Friday knocked down trees and power lines, prompting several local churches to step in with food and other help.
New Covenant Church organized a response after residents reported damage and widespread outages. “It was something where no one knew this was coming, a lot of power lines were down, trees were down…a lot of people without power, thousands of people so we were like we need to get together,” said Landon Brian, the church’s executive pastor.
Hundreds of meals were distributed from the church’s parking lot to people impacted by the weekend storm. Brian said the outreach also helped church members connect with residents. “They were extremely appreciative, we got to connect with people, meet new people, get some phone numbers so that we can check in on people,” he said.
The effort included Pleasant Garden Baptist and Alamance Presbyterian churches, which also helped prepare meals and offered showers.
“Considering the circumstances of what was a pretty rough weekend, it was one of the cooler things I’ve been able to see just how everybody came together…it wasn’t our church against their church it was just everyone coming together to make sure people were fed, safe, had options of places to go,” Brian said.
Brian said that when meals were not being handed out at the church, members went out during the weekend to deliver food to first responders working in the aftermath in Guilford County.
