WOODWORTH, N.D. (KMOT) – People are travelling from all over the state to see a flower garden in a small town of just 40 people.

It all started when a couple in Woodworth needed flowers for their wedding.

“It was the centerpiece of our wedding bouquet,” said Kirsten Dockter.

From that centerpiece, Kirsten and her husband Daven Dockter have grown into something beautiful. They’ve transformed their backyard into a flower garden.

There are over a thousand varieties of flowers planted in the garden, including one that can even grow eight feet tall—like the Hollyhill Tangelo.

It all started when they got married two years ago and were searching for the perfect wedding flowers.

“It was people talking, ‘Oh, Daven and Kirsten grew this. All these flowers are from their garden,’” said Kirsten.

Just as they’re family has grown, so has their garden.

“Kirsten and I really enjoy spending time out here with the flowers, with each other,” said Daven.

And people really enjoy coming to it. They’ve attracted visitors from across the state, including a couple from Mohall.

“That was probably the coolest compliment that we had received. ‘You don’t have to go very far to experience something like this,’” said Daven.

And while the flowers are beautiful, their main focus is actually deep underground, that’s where the tubers are.

Those tubers provide different varieties of dahlias that only a handful of people in North Dakota grow.

“We go to Fargo, Bismarck, and we went to Minot and Jamestown this year. And actually get to meet the people that are purchasing the tubers and talking to them,” said Daven.

The couple also has a self-serve flower cooler in front of their garage.

“At first, when we started it, people kind of thought we were crazy for the honor system. But to be honest, we live in a small town and it has been amazing,” said Kirsten.

It’s been a reminder to this young family to bloom where they’re planted.

“Raising our kids in the garden,” said Daven.

“It’s not something we look to make a lot of money off of or anything like that. It’s just pure joy,” said Kirsten.

Here in the Dockter’s garden, nothing blooms brighter than the joy these flowers bring.

Blooms on 2nd is giving the community a chance to pick flowers in their garden on Saturday.

They’re hosting a tour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

It’s located on the corner of 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue in Woodworth.
