Yes. The whole composition should work. Can it work with those ? Yes. Is it harder to achieve ? Also yes. Like with any irregularity a master can make it work.

All the fundamentals and rules can be broken only after you’ve mastered them. That’s the issue. People who could design a tree in perfect aesthetic with their eyes closed will experiment then people who couldn’t style a tree to save their life and are beginners want to try and outsmart centuries of advice.
Tbf I’m not immune to this. I thought I could outsmart soil composition when I started because I didn’t want to be tied to my trees only to have most die from over watering and root rot. It’s nice to have an organic mix if you travel often but the reality is it’s not good long term and I paid the price.

The smaller the tree, the more these quirks become exagerated. It’s an inevitable byproduct of working at these tiny scales. Scar tissue and swelling can’t be tamed as easily as the leaves or the finer ramification. That’s why Mame and Shohin tend to have that “fatty” (for lack of a better word) look to them. But don’t we all love those small chunky trees ?

Intereesting you point out the density here works to “cover” the broken rules. I think there is truth in that. With a trunk where there are bare parts, alternated with bar branches, the negative space becomes to symmetrical. Here without the negative space it is no issue.
