Becky MacQuarrie greets Heritage Home and Garden Tour visitors at the front entrance to her home on June 28. Husband Charles MacQuarrie was inside the Colonial Revival Foursquare house on the 2200 block of E Street, Eureka. The Eureka Heritage Society gave people maps to visit nine of Eureka’s fine historic homes, each framed with varied gardens planted with seasonal annuals and perennial flowers. Frederica Alto opens the door at the top of the sunflower tile stairs leading to a large sun room overlooking a backyard and garden area of the Becky and Charles MacQuarrie’s home. For many years, the home was owned by the Mengel family, known for displaying a “huge Yuletide snowman in the front yard every December,” according to the Home and Garden Tour book.

A framed rock garden hangs along one of the partitions, breaking up the garden and eating areas at the Lynn Evans and Julie Fulkerson home. The two have rehabilitated and renovated much of the home built in 1931 using local craftsmen and furnishings “found on the streets of Eureka,” according to the tour book.
